CIA Chief to Drag White House Into Torture Cover-Up Storm

www.commondreams.org

The CIA chief who ordered the destruction of secret videotapes recording the harsh interrogation of two top Al-Qaeda suspects has indicated he may seek immunity from prosecution in exchange for testifying before the House intelligence committee.

Jose Rodriguez, former head of the CIA’s clandestine service, is determined not to become the fall guy in the controversy over the CIA’s use of torture, according to intelligence sources.

The plot thickens and seems to be brewing a nice storm in the area of the white house.

Rodriguez seems to not want to take any blame for somebody elses decisions and too damn right too.
Good luck to him and hope all the dirty laundry comes out and truly stitches up the real guilty party...

The torture tape fingering Bush as a war criminal

President George Bush claimed Zubaydah was critical in identifying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as the mastermind behind 9/11. The president also conceded that at some point the CIA, believing Zubaydah was withholding information, “used an alternative set of procedures”, which were “safe and lawful and necessary”.

this case is more ominous for the administration because it presents a core example of what seems to be a cover-up, obstruction of justice and a direct connection between torture and the president, the vice-president and their closest aides.

A nice in-depth report on this continuing issue...

If he ever does testify with immunity, you can bet it will be in closed-door session.

The "national security" scandals come as fast as raindrops these days, but their perpetrators never feel a drop. Kieth Olberman on MSNBC even does a regular "where are they now?" segment on all the ones that were forgotten, that's how many there have been.

Sorry, I've become so disabused that I just can't believe this scandal will be any different.

You mean "If he ever gets a chance to testify" don't you?

Mr. Rodriguez, I seriously reccommend that you postpone any medical "check-ups" or "procedures" until after you are granted immunity and have given your testimony.

We would not want to hear of you experiencing a "William Casey".

this is a cover-up. any nation or military organization that promotes torture should be shut down. that includes the US military. I don't care if they look like osama bin laden-it's racial profiling. it's a shame that our country has become this blind. I hope people get to see some of those tapes. if there were any left over.

Here's an article by Andrew Sullivan, the disaffected conservative blogger that used to blog for Time and now the Atlantic, in the London Times Online, saying it's pretty cut-and-dried that the destroyed tapes implicated Bush and other top admin. officials in war crimes (i.e., authorizing torture as defined by int'l treaties).

You were reading my mind. Don't be surprised if this guy just can't take the pressure anymore and decides to walk deep into a VA forest and commits suicide.

I don't see this guy making it to the witness stand sorta like the Whitewater era.

Al Qaeda's method when captured it to use their "rights" to protect themselves. Theres an Al Qaeda manual that tells how to do it.

www.au.af.mil...

Lesson Eighteen on being detained.

IF AN INDICTMENT IS ISSUED AND THE TRIAL, BEGINS, THE BROTHER HAS TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING:

1 . At the beginning of the trial, once more the brothers must insist on proving that torture was inflicted on them by State Security [investigators ]before the judge.

2. Complain [to the court] of mistreatment while in prison.

3. Make arrangements for the brother’s defense with the attorney, whether he was retained by the brother’s family or court-appointed.

4. The brother has to do his best to know the names of the state security officers, who participated in his torture and mention their names to the judge.[These names may be obtained from brothers who had to deal with those officers in previous cases.]

5. Some brothers may tell and may be lured by the state security investigators to testify against the brothers [i.e. affirmation witness ], either by not keeping them together in the same prison during the trials, or by letting them talk to the media. In this case, they have to be treated gently, and should be offered good advice, good treatment, and pray that God may guide them.

6. During the trial, the court has to be notified of any mistreatment of the brothers inside the prison.

7. It is possible to resort to a hunger strike, but i t is a tactic that can either succeed or fail.

8. Take advantage of visits to communicate with brothers outside prison and exchange information that may be helpful to them in their work outside prison [according to what occurred during the investigations]. The importance of mastering the art of hiding messages is self evident here.

-When the brothers are transported from and to the prison [on their way to the court] they should shout Islamic slogans out loud from inside the prison cars to impress upon the people and their family the need to support Islam.

-Inside the prison, the brother should not accept any work that may belittle or demean him or his brothers, such as the cleaning of the prison bathrooms or hallways.

-The brothers should create an Islamic program for themselves inside the prison, as well as recreational and educational ones, etc.

-The brother in prison should be a role model in selflessness. Brothers should also pay attention to each others needs and should help each other and unite vis a vis the prison officers.

-The brothers must take advantage of their presence in prison for obeying and worshipping [God] and memorizing the Qora ’an, etc. This is in addition to all guidelines and procedures that were contained in the lesson on interrogation and investigation. Lastly, each of us has to understand that we don ’t achieve victory against our enemies through these actions and security procedures. Rather, victory is achieved by obeying Almighty and Glorious God and because of their many sins. Every brother has to be careful so as not to commit sins and everyone of us has to do his best in obeying Almighty God, Who said in his Holy Book: “We will, without doubt. help Our messengers and those who believe (both)in this world ’s life and the one Day when the Witnesses will stand forth.” May God guide us.

Lessons learned.

He's high profile now, so he may have bought himself more time. The higher the profile this case takes on with what Rodriguez is threatening to do, the safer he becomes. It's not a foolproof death proof move, but it certainly helps to make him safer. The reason he's threatening may very well be because he feels his life is threatened. What a scary position to be in.
