back on topic (sort of). both you and the OP really ought to read a book called 'flicker' by theodore roszak. now THAT book will totally make you look at film (and the film industry) in a totally new light!

Hi There,

There is something wonderful to be learned of the choice for technologies offered to the consumer here, and that comes about from understanding what type of consumer one is.

Basically, there are two types of consumer, and each carries an overtone of ego-identification of the consumer-type: one is either a practical consumer, or one is a aesthetic consumer. I suppose one could give a classification to a third, more pragmatic consumer whom is a hybrid of the former two.

We could expect a practical consumer to go for Blue-ray, whilst the aesthetic consumer might go for HD, whilst the hybrid would seek a combination of the two but having to compromise on the engineering excellence provided in buying one technology over the other.

For myself, I would catergorise myself as being of the third hybrid type. Firstly, I want a product that does exactly what it says on the tin, but I also want it to look good. So for me, personally, practical considerations will always outweigh aesthetic considerations, for when you are buying engineering technology, you do so on practical considerations in mind first, then on its aesthetic appeal. To buy technology simply on aesthetic considerations, opens one up to becoming the owner of a goodlooking product that is usefully crap.

Moral of the tale, then, is to look beneath the surface, pop the bonnet (hood) and look at the engine.

You're kidding, right?

You do realize that now that warner bros is supporting Blu Ray, that means there are only 2 studios left that haven't gotten with the program?

Blu Ray has majority support in the industry now. You'd hafta be blind not to see the writing on the wall...

as to jedi miller.....someoene needs to either educate him, or kick him in the head, because he's seriously broken.

No worries. I'm going back to school and taking telemedia courses. TV and film directing, Cinema as a form of expression & Culture and the Media. only 9 units..but will help me to become a better independent filmmaker. Wish I could use film, but I see HD video is all the hype.

George Lucas was always on the cutting edge of technology. I doubt his original starwars films were in Dolby Digital Surround Sound or encoded to THX specifications?

George Lucas since decided to move with progress and release his movies again by cleaning the films and putting them into the digital arena. If his films transfer and look better on blue ray, then $ell I'm sure he'll no doubt do that and maybe increase the soundtrack to 7.1 or higher
If there's no such thing as Digital film, then I was dooped by buying a DV. I know George Lucas also filmed in his ground breaking Sony digital camera which was shot on digital tape. You can see this in the behind the scenes shots for one of the most recent movies, I can't remember which. You'll probably find the majority of serious movie makers would love to see their own movie converted to HD so they essentially looks clearer, more colourful, sharper and offering a better movie experience.

Screw the original concept, if you want to watch a VHS tape that closely resembles the poor audio and video quality go ahead.

Home DV tape can produce up to 500 line resolution which is far suprior to DVD so as standards go up, film makers move their movies around to suit this and enhance the whole movie experience. As this happens the encoding process also improves so things can be transfered to higher storage mediums with further improvements.

Digital film represents digital media - ie a new format. This was clear when digital music was announced.

For those who don't like it, sure you're welcome to watch a VHS or Beta

But Lucas made a mistake, he was persuaded by the kids on the block (Employee's) mostly his digital artists to shot revenge of the sith in digital format using the HD cameras SONY. you are right there. and yes, it's ok for studios to sell revenge of the sith in HD, because that was it's true shooting format.
but Lucas still prefers true film. Indiana jones 4 is being shot in film cell. He was experimenting with digital filmmaking but failed miserably.

but to be selling black and white movies and old 60s and 70s in HD? I mean come on man! it's s scam. that's not true HD>

I fully understand where you are coming from. As mentioned above if today’s movie restoration process is further enhanced and more clarity and definition is available (even higher than dvd) I think the title is justified. If it still looks dodgy then it's nothing more than a jib and I agree with you on this but Blue Ray will need to offer all types of movies and titles for it to sell just like DVD has done.

You have to remember the DVD format (and processing to get to DVD) made movies much clearer than VHS and this of course is more referenced to movies where time was taken: ie – the black and white movie “The Hustler” with Paul Neumann. With this in mind if Blue Ray makes movies clearer and sharper than DVD then I don't see the problem with it at all, even if they are not shot in HD as long as they look better than the DVD counterpart.

As I mentioned, if old movies are ported to Blue Ray and they still look like crap, then I see a valid point
. If they take their time and make it more appealing I'm all for that.

My question is more out of curiosity, I am not arguing at all, just wanted to make that clear first.

Why would Lucas studios have released enhanced audio and picture quality version to DVD if he liked lower resolution analouge format? If he is filming again in normal film, it would probably suggest a more familiar format for him and the special effects team that would no doubt later get ported to digital.

As you're well aware any Digial Media is a form of archiving that is used because it will never deteriorate. Rest assured, I'm sure Lucas would send his master copies to a digital medium for archiving. All that work to watch film corrode over time isn't worth it

He also added some new digital scenes, landscapes and characters in his old movies to match his vision. I am not even a starwars fan but I like to see guys like Lucas push their standards higher and higher and into new frontiers in terms of technology.

As for old movie with no enhancement, that would be a jib yes but if nothing can be done to make the movie any better it would be released to grow the library of Blue Ray Discs to make people more interested in the format.

I’m dead serious. And I will be proven right. Sony is exceptionally skilled at shooting itself in the foot. They could have every last one of the studios on their side and parlay it to a complete failure. They are just that good.

Blu Ray has majority support in the industry now. You'd hafta be blind not to see the writing on the wall...

And it’s the customers who have the last say. And they’ll choose HD-DVD.

Agreed. He is totally invincible to facts and logic. He ought to drop out of film school and do PR work for the Republican party.

Please, PLEASE enroll yourself in a course on the TECHNICAL side of filming / editing / postproduction / whatever.

At this point I don’t even know who the heck you think you’re kidding.

Just nitpicking, but 500 lines would be about equal to DVD. (DVD is 720×480.)

From what I've seen HD is just more sharper and similar to how we see through our own eyes. SD is akin to having less than perfect eyesight

Man you seriously are delusional. I already showed you the facts that blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD in terms of software sales. Blu-ray has already been chosen.

I see there's no point in arguing with you anymore as I have just noticed you've been banned.

Bluray has NOT already been chosen as the default type for HD dvd's.
I agree with Smurf that HD-DVD will eventually win out. Sony has many of times in the past had the better product with loads of support, but in the end, their product failed in the consumer market.

BTW, don't forget the porn industry. They are behind HD-DVD because its cheaper to produce and no DRM.

Just heard, on local News...Warner Bros has decided to throw their hat in with Sony....

So, as a dumb consumer just itchin' to buy the next best thing...and don't tell me to go BetaMax!! Seems I can get the HD-DVD, or a Blu-Ray...OR, since it's digital...why not a machine that can read BOTH formats??!!??

How about this, since they seem to use different lasers...something like a GoVideo thing, but one side is HD-DVD and the other is Blu-Ray?

Oh...wait a minute....I saw 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'!!! I know David Bowie is going to invent a crystal the size of a golf ball to hold all the data we need for music and video!!

I'm waiting for that format....

Oh, and to all you manufacturers out there, let's design something to play vinyl, 8-tracks, and cassettes while we're at it!! It will sell big time!!!

Not to forget, I have a load of LaserDiscs too, I want to see and hear those...you have to provide up-conversion for all of this, of course, or I ain't buyin' it!!

Going back to school, eh'? Well, make sure you're going to a properly accredited educational institution....because up until now, it sounds as if you've been getting your lessons mail order from some drunk guy living in a washroom stall at subway station.

And once you've gotten yourself set up at this proper institution, be sure to pay attention to what your professor is saying...and when class is over, read up on what you were taught in class....make sure it's all right. You may want to, as smurf suggested, sign yourself up for some classes that deal with the technical side of things as well, because you seem to be sorely lacking in terms of knowledge, when it comes to that particullar field.
