I was watching conan and a tsunami warning came over the screen. Too far away to affect me, and I haven't heard anything else about it, so It couldn't of been too bad.

...thanks for the update -- 7+ on the scale is pretty massive, surprised you didn't feel that one, but Alaska is a pretty huge state...

I am not surprised, felt a big one was on its way.

I have been checking out earthquake.usgs.gov... every day since Chile 6.6 on 16/12/707.

Seems to be quite a lot happening.

My noaa emergency radio sounded off here at about 12:30. It scared the living piss out of me. I decided I live too close to the ocean tonight. No tsunami this time, and it was pretty far from the mainland. We are expecting a big one up here though... in the 9 range.

...good to hear from you, though you've taken off to the wilderness for next weeks' significant date.

Did you feel that one? Plus seven on the scale seems pretty large by any standards. Both the Pacific plates have been getting hit a lot lately.

Speaking of that date and this specific quake activity -- you ever see those conspiracy posters that mention a grey alien base under those islands? They getting ready for blast off?

7 is mediocre if you aren't right there.

I am taking off here in a couple days. Getting excited.

The scale is a log scale, so a 8.0 is ten times stronger than a 7.0. So a 9.0 is 100 times stronger than a 7.0.

i do not have data at hand, but it looks like the number of the earthquakes with the magnitude >6 is increasing very fast ( 5x times more than the prev. months of 2007) .Maybe December is a month where earthquakes are more "likely" to happen ? it could be also connected with the start of the new solar cycle ( watch the solar activity in the last month!) , anyway it would be great if someone would have historical statistic with the >6 number of earthquakes ...

Glad things are all ok and that there seems to be no damage or tsunami,

Last one that caused real damages was in 1957 that was an 8,8 and caused a 40 foot wave,

Be safe, as i think alot of people are feeling that theres a big quake impending somewhere,

there was some talk that a man in Brazil is causing a s stir saying that he feels there will be a large quake in Indonsia on sunday,

Well, I am betting on the 26th as the next big one. Only because we have had fairly significant quakes on Dec 26th for the last 3 years.

Here's a historical quake site, w/ the highest on record per continent. In the U.S., the worst one was 8.3 in San Fran (1906). (although, the page seems 'biased' -- as there's no number stats for the other countries.)

www.earthwaves.org...

...on the edit: going through an almanac helps, even ones in the six range have been killers of many people, even over the last few years, mainly in China & the mid east.
