Sentinel1, are you part of the "English only" crowd? 'cause it's spelled "trying"... I thought you might like to know. Oh, and also, you only capitalize the first word in a sentence, unless using a proper noun.

The proposed amendment by the two Republicans doesn't eliminate the possibility of a fence. It just doesn't mandate a DOUBLE LAYERED fence. Even then, they're not ruling out a double-layered fence completely. They want to give the Dept. of Homeland Security some discretion about the type of fence they would use or even to determine if some other method of deterrence might be more effective. Nobody--Democrat or Republican--is talking about opening the border. The sky isn't falling.

sorry, had to say that because you made such a great point....
and israel doesn't have a "fence" they have a "temporary barrier" which is a big wall.
however, it's not a wall that is stretching anywhere near the length of the american border...

anyway, the idea is stupid, just as the idea of nationalism is stupid in an age where we're connected to the world in the way we are.

THAT'S THE SOLUTION!!!! Thank you, a fence won't work. Troops allowed to shoot the second they step foot on American land? No more illegal invasion of America. Maybe at most a chain link fence at the border with signs saying "You Cross This Fence You Will Die" in English only since this is America, and the second they cross... Bang!

Um, a little late for that isn't it? And I'm part Indian, no where near enough to own a casino but part Indian.

Anyways, is the white man right now killing your people? Selling them drugs? Raping your people? No? The white man is losing its rent money to you. Unlike Mexicans who come here, commit crimes, then either hide or flee to Mexico where they are protected.

Want to fix the illegal alien problem? Two ideas for all y'all.

1) Declare war on Mexico, capture and annex the Mexican Government. Shouldn't be hard, we have 20 million of their people here to help us. Rebuild it as a free republic and send them on their way. That's a good boy.

2) Repeal NAFTA, after all the massive influx of illegals is due to the need to survive, you know eat, have shelter, raise a family. NAFTA made it so the common citizen in Mexico cannot afford to live. A country that was build on corn crops now imports corn from the U.S. It's cheaper you know, economics.

I'm against Illegal immigration, and lost (what was once)a profitable business because of it. My competition hired illegals and I didn't. I went broke because of it.
I also know the stories of Mexican children selling dough nuts and washing cars for $.50 instead of going to school so they could help feed their families. Really quite sad the way we helped impoverish the Mexican people. You want to fix the border problem, give them a reason not to want to come here in the first place. Fence or no fence, they are coming, not even bullets
will stop those who are fighting to survive, feed their families, and simply try to live a "decent" life.

Its not the Dems. or Reps. its NAFTA, big business and greed!

A fence will not keep Mexicans out. I hate to break it to you, but there's other ways other than "hopping the border." Build an expensive fence and they'll just shovel harder. There's a reason for that, too. Mexico is bunk and they will do anything to support their families back home.

Are you people paying attention? The migrants who walk over the border are the minority. The overwhelming vast majority of them get here through harder-to-prevent ways. Why? Because walking through the freaking desert is a bad idea. I know a lot of posters here apparently think that being born south of the border makes a person slightly below an ape, but it ain't so. They're smart people, just like anyone else, capable of rational, logical thinking, and really damn good planning when they need to.

Personally I think anyone who works as hard to get into the United States and puts up with as much crap when they get here as Latin American migrants do, probably deserve to be here more than most of the people complaining about them.

well i have to say i did not think we were going to agree on much when i started reading your post, see i am a 'tree hugging dirt worshiper'. your point #2 is right on. the destruction of traditional mexican subsistence strategies is, imho, the driving force behind illegal immigration on the scale we see it today.

repeal ALL the free trade agreements. then we can save the US at the same time we save mexico.

Bingo. NAFTA and it's various clones are simply free passes to exploitation of the industrial and agricultural sectors of the countries involved for the enrichment of the elite few within those countries (Who curiously all have mailing addresses in the Cayman islands. Funny, that)

What NAFTA has brought Mexico is gigantic dept, agricultural monopolization and legal hassles (Montsanto's now-famous "sue you for our patented pollen getting into your corn" for instance) and far less rights for workers than they started out with.

Yet for some reason, all Republicans seem to be able to find wrong with Bill Clinton is his party and his penis. Guess screwing over a bunch of other countries for the betterment of America's tax-free caste is acceptable, as compared to sleeping with a Jewish girl.

right! i admitadly am a progressive liberal. i loved bill clinton when he was in office. sadly i was young and naive. now looking back i have decided i am not down with his policy's. free trade is a economists pipe dream. ricardo's theories on comparative advantage, which free trade is based on, expressly stated such a system would only work as long as money was non-mobile, that is unable to cross a nations boards. that is clearly not the case today.

not to mention the impacts on nations when their traditional subsistence strategies are taken from them. or the impacts of processing and shipping, etc...
