where did the punch/kick sound effect come from

ive been a lurker for a couple of years now just recently i started up an account ,
i was watching an old kung fu movie, then it got me thinking where did the punching sound effect come from, where was it 1st used, what makes this effect, if anyone could help me find it would be helpful
