You're thinking of the plaques attached to the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft:

The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold anodized aluminum plaques which were placed on board the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message from humanity, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 are intercepted by extraterrestrial beings. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.

The Pioneer spacecraft were the first human-built objects to leave the solar system. The plaque is attached to the antenna support struts in a position that shields it from erosion by stellar dust.

The Voyager Golden Record, a much more complex and detailed message using (then) state-of-the-art media, was attached to the Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977...

...The original idea, that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from mankind, was first mentioned by Eric Burgess when he visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California during the Mariner 9 mission. Together with Richard Hoagland, he approached Dr. Carl Sagan, who had lectured about communication with extraterrestrial intelligences at a conference in Crimea.

Dr. Sagan was enthusiastic about the idea of sending a message with the Pioneer spacecraft. NASA agreed to the plan and gave him three weeks to prepare a message. Together with Dr. Frank Drake he designed the plaque, and the artwork was prepared by Sagan's then wife Linda Salzman Sagan.

The first plaque was launched with Pioneer 10 on March 2, 1972, and the second followed with Pioneer 11 on April 5, 1973. Both spacecraft left the solar system in the 1980s.

The article doesn't mention whether Carl Sagan later expressed regret for the decision to send a "roadmap" to our solar system into the cosmos, but, then again, how much should one expect from a Wiki source?

Right. Any spacefaring species would be at the top of the food chain from wherever they hail from. I've never been comfortable about broadcasting our whereabouts such as with the Voyager missions. Anyway, I think it's prudent to practice extreme restraint when considering communicating with extraterrestrials. And lately I've been have second thoughts about disclosure. I know I'm going to get hammered for this, but I'm not entirely sure that full disclosure would be of benefit to mankind, especially given the wacky and irresponsible world we live in today. Does the human race really need to know that it is no longer at the top of the food chain and center of the universe? Our modern technology is at best about 300 years old. That's nothing compared to the possibility of encountering beings who are technologically advanced thousands, millions, or billions of years beyond us. In the spirit of Carl Sagan, a sufficiently advanced may have outgrown its need for violence and hostility. Still that doesn't mean they would wipe out all of humanity if given a good reason. Knowing that we are no longer at the top of the food chain would at best be a catalyst for more anxiety and fear being injected into the consciousness of our society. I'm pretty sure that we don't need more of that these days.

I think the odds are better than 50/50 that the aliens we contact, if any, will be hostile, at least at first...

My reasoning is as follows, the alien race is more than likely at the top of the food chain, in all likelihood a predator/hunter. That implies a certain mindset, a genetic principle to hunt. When two alpha's meet in the animal world conflict is inevitable. The same, it would seem to me, will hold true when two alpha species meet. Hopefully I'm wrong, it just seems logical to me.

Not that it matters, mankind is naturally curious, and a wanderer, and we've taken our first halting steps towards the rest of the Universe. There's gonna be unfreindly types out there, and freindly ones, too. I just think the unfreindly ones will be more common. Nothing says that they won't become freinds, but at least at first there is going to be alot of teeth baring and growling...

I am very inclined to think also that any advance civilazation in order to acquire the level of technology they would have to overcome the violence and hostility in their earlier stages or never had to live it in the first place.

May be violence and war its just a trait of our race, many of our technological advances have come through war, which later found their way to commercial use.

That is most assuredly not the case...

A civilization advances most rapidly when in conflict. Neccessity being the "mother of invention" and all that...

Kinder and gentler ain't neccessarily the way it's going to be, IMHO. Frankly, I hope I'm wrong, 'cause there's always someone bigger, stronger, tougher.

But I think at some point a type 3 or 4 civilization would have to come to understand than violence and war is just not the way. That type of civilization would have found a way to take care of their needs other than go out of their way to obliterate any othe civilization to get what they need.

Here we fight because of religion, oil and land. The last 2 things I don't think an advance civilization would have any problem acquiring.

That's just my opinion though.

On the one hand we have the 'Fear Mongers' wanting to think for us, and on the other hand we have the "Love Brigade" wanting to do the same thing. The 'Love Brigade' swears that the 'Fear Mongers just want to control us with a "False Flag", and keep us from being happy and spiritual. The 'Fear Mongers' are sure that the 'Love Brigade' is just trying to assure that we'll have our guard down when we're attacked, and may actually themselves have already turned to The Dark Side.

Really folks. Like most things in life, it's not either side here that is 100% on the money, IMO. Let's go do what humans do, explore. But let's be realistic enough to admit that any civilization we might happen to encounter, has the potential to be good, bad, or a little of both. We can't afford to be afraid of the dark, nor should we be walking into it with our eyes closed.

Great. Then all those super evolved humans can explain to the rest of the aliens, the ones that evolved on some other planet, that we normal Earth people believe in walking softly and carrying a big stick.

I think this might work out fine.
