Scientists Find Energy Source of Northern Lights

www.foxnews.com

New data from NASA's Themis mission, a quintet of satellites launched this winter, found the energy comes from a stream of charged particles from the sun flowing like a current through twisted bundles of magnetic fields connecting Earth's upper atmosphere to the sun.

The energy is then abruptly released in the form of a shimmering display of lights, said principal investigator Vassilis Angelopoulos of the University of California at Los Angeles.

These results were presented at the American Geophysical Union so they must be fairly sure of what they found. Hmmm.. charged particles from the sun traveling along a magnet field that connects with the sun's magnetic fields...
The magnetic field of earth comes up against the sun's solar wind and allows charged particles to flow causing illumination of these belts of magnetic flux above the earth. So we are looking at the earths magnetic belts or bands lit up by the sun's energy.
