Ice storm in US claims 14 lives

news.bbc.co.uk

At least 14 people have died in the US as an ice storm sweeps several states just east of the Rocky Mountains.

More than 400,000 people were left without electricity after trees and power lines toppled in the icy blast.

The National Weather Service issued ice storm warnings for parts of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Texas and said more ice was on the way.

Ice up to 1in (2.5cm) thick layered parts of Oklahoma and Missouri, where states of emergency have been declared.

It also did a number on parts of Oklahoma. It seems to have been fairly fast moving, as these things go, so it didn't get as bad as it could have. The faster an ice storm moves in this country, the less ice accumulation, so the less damage. Because eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas are mountainous and tree covered, heavy ice means a long time to repair power lines and such.

If you don't see me post for a week or two in the winter, it will likely be because of an ice storm along the OK/Ar border. I was without power for 16 days once a few years ago.
