They are planning to build three new Tu-160 strategic bombers for Russias air force at the Kazan S.A. Gorbunov Aviation Production Association, the Interfax agency reports on Thursday.

At the present time, the military airplanes are on the assembly line, but the period for their delivery to the troops still has not been determined, the agency adds.

A visit of a delegation of air force representatives to the Kazan Aviation Production Association has been planned for Friday. Military specialists of strategic and transport aviation headed by commander-in-chief, General-Colonel Vladimir Mikhaylov, will consider possible periods for delivery of the missile carriers to the forces.

The TU-160 does'nt seem to be much of a threat unless it has low altitude capability like an F-111 or Tornado which I did'nt see mentioned in the article.

I suppose with shoot and scoot it could threaten a carrier battle group in sqaudron strength. High altitude attack over land defences of any modernly armed country without first gaining air superiority and knocking out SAM sites seems suicidal though.

it is a strategic missile carrier, it will be equipped with new generation KH cruise missiles With 5000km (some nuclear) range and more, and yes, it can make a low altitude penetration which will be at 1,030kph

It fires its missiles 3000km away from target..

Far from the reach of any defences..

Also,

Using your logic, B-52 and B-1/2 are also useless..

Perhaps Russian economy can't sustain more than 3!

Look that those things, they are huge and must cost a fortune to build and mainly maintain them.

Well, I was going to say that, but I didn't feel like stirring up any of the fanatics.

Also, that plane looks to be a ripoff of the B-1. Or is the B-1 based on the design of the Tu-160

Hehehe, whats with the sarcasm (the rolling eyes bit)?
I figured it was a legit question.
But if you insist with using 'sarcasm'...hehehe, hows this:

the Tu-160 is not a ripoff of the B-1, it is alot bigger, can carry alot more, the avionics are a bit more primitive though, but generally, if the maintanance and pilots are equal, the Tu-160 is the better bomber, by far

Ok, so it's not similar to the B-1 then. I was just commenting on the external appearance, had no idea what the actual specs were. They still LOOK alike.
