A serious shortage of organs means transplant surgeons are being forced to use body parts from drug addicts.

Between 2002 and 2007 some 450 organs came from donors with a history of drug abuse, which may affect the quality of the organ and raise infection risks.

The lack of viable organs is due in part to the fact that fewer healthy people are dying in car accidents, when organs can often be retrieved intact.

There is currently debate on whether to overhaul the system of organ donation.

The government is examining a proposal that everyone should be put on the organ donor register, unless they specifically "opt out".

Oh, right, what they gonna do? let everyone loose onto the roads? reduce the amount of driving convictions? reduce the amount of stop checks for drunk drivers?

Or maybe they'll think up something else rather than place everyone onto a list that a lot of people, due to religious or personal beliefs, will refuse to be on.

You just can't win. Reducing the amount of people who die from accidents or murder increase the chance of someone dying who needs a transplant...

So what do you do? Take organs from possibly infected over dosed junkies and the like.

It's almost as bad as giving an alcoholic an alcoholics liver.

I just cannot fathom out the thinking of some people.

Oh, here's an idea, why not take organs from the millions of people who die each day from starvation or extreme poverty just so you can keep your workforce alive and keeping those tax benefits rolling in...
