Concerns of New Ebola Strain in Uganda

The World Health Organization has expressed concern about a new strain of the Ebola virus that has appeared in Uganda’s Bundibugyo District. The last outbreak of the virus was in 2000, when 426 people were diagnosed and 173 died.

The strain is more difficult to find and isolate than those seen previously.

Recent efforts to isolate patients have suffered a setback. “Some people refuse to come out of their home to seek treatment, but our social mobilization team is trying to convince them to come out,” said Samuel Kazinga, who heads the district’s Ebola Taskforce. He described the phenomenon as “psychological” (The Monitor).

This is a sneaky and slow form of the deadly virus, perhaps a mutated strain or a manufactured strain being tested for future use.

Wonderful. So the military has improved on Ebola. Now we don't have to worry about bleeding to death from every orifice. That gives me great comfort.

It does appear to be a kinder, gentler kind of horrid death, that medical workers got, died, and all the others ran away.

Well, I'm glad someone else has a sense of humor about this.

The media has worked tirelessly to perpetuate the myth that Ebola makes people bleed to death from their orifices. While some people experience slight bleeding of that sort, they certainly don't bleed to death, and this symptom isn't even present in the majority of cases.

The images you see of people covered in blood and sores are worst-case scenarios, chosen for their alarmist (in other words, money-making) value, and even then it's probably due more to the fact that they are sick people in third world countries than anything.
