Yes you can run BOINC knowing it is doing something.
Credit is awarded completely normally, and won't be potentially lost like the BOINCbeta test credit.
You can also see you work units scan progress and check the statistics online.

I am still running seti classic and have started a bigger push this past month. The team ranking has gone up 30 spots 390 - 360.
Should I switch over now, or just wait till classic is retired?

From the forums I've read some news about the switchover from Seti@home Classic to BOINC.
More hardware is being ordered, which will increase the ability to handle all the current S@H Classic users. Once these items arrive early next year,
everything will be configured, and Classic will be turned off. With the new hardware the BOINC pending credit will be turned back on.
Some more news though (more recent).
The hardware arrived early, and over the next 2 weeks or so it will be setup.
So when will S@H Classic end? I estimate in January it'll be ready to close, but maybe they'll give everyone some time to switch to BOINC and give
them some extra time.
Not much time is left for S@H Classic, so I'll be switching back to S@H Classic to finish some more workunits.

On the road to decommission:
1. get servers in place for BOINC that will handle 500,000 new users. Web servers, data servers, databases, etc. This is happening right now.
2. Mass e-mail asking all Seti@home users to consider moving to BOINC. Info will also be posted on the homepage. There will be a clear cut-off date
when S@H Classic stops working.
3. Before turning off the old databases for S@H, the final stats page will be generated.
Also, BOINC v4.14 coming soon, which fixes a serious bug. This bug causes failure of a job if the download of any of its input files fails (the
correct behavior is to retry and complete the download, then run the job). Moreover, any other job that used the same files would also fail.

The Seti@home BOINC site has been redesigned, so the end of S@H Classic may be very near. Also, they're asking if anyone could create milestone
certificates using the new S@H logo.
BOINC v4.16 it out, but not available for download yet officially. This will be a bug fix release.
The next alpha is v4.60, which has been taggd for release.

Any day now, an email will be sent out that will recommend people to switch to BOINC. This will be the first step in shutting down Seti@home Classic.

On the Seti@home homepage:
NOTICE: SETI@home is in the process of switching to new software called BOINC, which lets you run other projects (like Climateprediction.net and
Einstein@home) on your computer as well as SETI@home. Please visit our new SETI@home/BOINC web site.

OK, I just tried to join the team and couldn't get anywhere regardless of what I tried.
Is there a bug in the system at the moment or am I doing something wrong?
Love and light,
Wupy

Yeah. I've been unable to connect for several days and still can't now. The setiboinc site says they're having power supply problems and the
project is having a lot of downtime due to them.
