yep, Spain ruled this part of the counrty. One cool aspect (for architects like me) of the history of Spanish rule and colonialism is the built form of the cities they established. The form was all laid out in the Law of the Indies (google L.O.I. and Miami University to see the full text). It is cool because places like New Mexico, Arizona, California, Texas, and Florida in the US have similar forms based on this document. I am currently working with and architect from Columbia and it was fun to look at and talk about how the forms of his cities also reflect this history.

Anyway I digress...

I agree with Bone13, the Spanish ruled this part of th world (SW) and then when Mexico won their independence from Spain they owned it. Then we took it and now we own it. This of course is saying nothing about a people's cultural and historic right to a place, the world sadly does not seem to want to work that way.
