China Recycling Used Condoms as Cheap Hair Bands
news.yahoo.com
Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally
meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.
In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan
and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

Sheez, is nothing " NASTY" to them.
I mean, who would even have come up with this idea?
The article states that the hair bands could infect people using or touching them with AIDS, genital warts, or other diseases.
Hey, but they're cheap! A bag of 10 sells for 3 cents!
NASTY!

Guang-dong...Not just the name of the province, but also the name of the ailment arising from using these new hairbands
the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong

It just gets funnier the more you read!

What more can you expect from the country that brought you SARS?
Don't be surprised if these rubbi-bands make it to your local dollar store.

I've also heard people in china uses rat meat to export to other countries, that's to make it look like a chicken instead of selling real ones.
Ew.

The link to the story seems to be down, but IMHO this is a fake story. A number of false reports have come out of China on all sorts of things and
this seems to me to be one of them.
People in China are not as backwards as some would like you to believe.
Just my two cents.

Could you please elaborate how would this be a fake story? Can you provide me the example links of false reports that you claim they are? How would
you know they're "false reports"?
Thanks

I suppose the advantage to these would be they become non-slip?
This is sick, really, but where do they get them? Is there a single disposal assigned to condoms there?

There was a fake story posted on ATS not so long ago about buns being made out of cardboard. It turned out that it was a spot of fanciful
journalism.
I think they shot the guy that wrote it.
It also wouldn't surprise me if this was some dis-info to get more people off Chinese made goods...
Problem is EVERYTHING is made in China!!

You don't need the government to do it, vote with your wallet.
If Americans stopped looking for the cheapest crap they can get from Walmart and other retailers you would force them to change their inventory. If
you buy US made goods you provide Americans with jobs and reduce imports of junk like lead painted toys.
Look at the label before you open your wallet.

I Believe it is false for a few reasons, the first being common sense. Think about it... How would one go about collecting USED condoms in the first
place??? I could see perhaps recycling condoms that failed in manufacturing BEFORE leaving the plant, but collecting used ones??? It just isn't
financially practical.
Second, the news link is no longer up. This might mean that it was pulled for being bogus. I could not locate another credible source.
Third, as mentioned previously, there have been other false reports about business practices in China, some even appeared here on ATS. People
sometimes believe in the oddest stories without taking time to consider it's veracity.
And Finally, Having just returned from China, I believe I can state that in my personal experience no one there is that stupid to try such a thing.
Hair bands are extraordinarily cheap and easy to make, and attempting to collect used condoms for such a purpose is absurd. Chinese people are
neither so poor nor so stupid to want to buy such an item. Quality hair bands can be bought very cheaply quite easily in any city, town, or village.
In remote tribal areas the locals make their own style of hair bands and wouldn't need to buy them from some filthy factory.
I chalk this item up to a poorly executed urban myth. Perhaps you can point me to a verifiable news source that can confirm the story. All there seems
to be out there is the retelling of a supposed China Daily news item, but with no actual sources to check. My guess is that this all started from
Clothing decorated with condoms seen at the 4th China Reproductive Health New Technologies and Products Expo in Beijing. Recycled rubber goods have
been used for a variety of purposes but claiming that they were condoms used for sexual purposes, and then turned into hair bands has yet to be proven
clearly.

Whats the big deal here?
If the condoms are cleaned then why not use them for something else?
This global throwaway mindset is BS. Good, I would use them.
We should really be trying to recycle everything and re use everything.
NEW! Hairbands with added protien
oh edit to add...for those saying it is disgusting. Condoms do not break down in the sewer. Generally people throw them down the toilet.
In Australia we have hygiene disposal bins for womans products in toilets.
My old house had a bio cycle. You could not throw anything down the toilet. If you did it would stay in there and you would eventually have to pay
someone to empty it and clean it out = costing you thousands of dollars.
Oh its so disgusting but anyone who uses them just flushes them?
That is lazy and irresponsible.
