Hackers hijack web search results

news.bbc.co.uk

A huge campaign to poison web searches and trick people into visiting malicious websites has been thwarted.

The booby-trapped websites came up in search results for search terms such as "Christmas gifts" and "hospice".

Windows users falling for the trick risked having their machine hijacked and personal information plundered.

The criminals poisoned search results using thousands of domains set up to convince search index software they were serious sources of information.

Chinese domains, hosted in the US with a campaign hosted by a Russian group??

Is this just scaremongering or is something a lot more important going on?

China has a heavily regulated internet service and I suspect Russia has a similar amount of control over it's content and usage.

Just what do the hackers hope to gain from the information they get? Is it a ploy to obtain your private details or the operational details of windows itself?

Who funds the hackers? How many hours would they have to put into such attempts?
Ir seems like an awful lot of effort to gain personal data on people and to what end? It would be far more business savvy to hack the windows and other platforms such as google and yahoo themselves so as to ensure the net will always be open and free to all.

Is the undermining of peoples computers the easiest way into any major internet control. Do Microsoft ensure we have their patches so they can continue to hide their own data, rather than any actual attack being directed at the public?
