The maximum is now predicted to be 2013, not 2012. In addition, it is not expected to be that powerful a solar maximum. This does not mean that large
events are excluded from happening.

You are looking at old information. The peak is predicted for 2013. There is no prediction that the storms would be on the level of the 1859 event. Even if such a thing were to happen it does not mean that flares are directed at the Earth.
