The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, intends to purchase an Active Protection System from Rafael Armament Development Authority Ltd., Haifa, Israel. The Trophy Active Protection System is the only known devise currently available that demonstrates a high technical maturity level of TRL 9 and robust logistics trail incumbent with current fielding activities and has demonstrated performance versus multiple threats with validated test data. A solicitation will not be posted. Contract award is estimated to be November 2007. "

yeah for anyone walking near these things when they go off - `just going to get the shaopping ma , *walks down street* BAM heads gets blown off by the flachettes as a brick gets thrown at the vehicle`

Needed? yes , a system to use to minimise civilian casualities? not a chance.

Russia allready Deploy `Arena` - and India use Arena as well.

The system isn't designed to protect civvies, it's made as a vehicle protection platform. However it will have to protect against injury to nearby troops, so peripheral risk must be minimal.

Trophy was designed to effectively operate in a dense urban environment, where armored vehicles operate closely with integrated infantry forces. Therefore, direction, formation and energy of the fragments are designed to ensure effective target kill with low collateral damage, and low risk to nearby troops.

Trophy Active Protection System

There are no details yet publically available as to the exact design of the "beam" that the system produces, just that it is metalic in nature.

Hmmm I thought that Raytheon was developing an equivalent system? I guess 2012 was a bit too long to wait for an APS.

The Raytheon system was chosen for the FCS family of vehicles and systems. However it is still in development phase and not ready for field us, hence why the article poignantly mentions the TRL issue. There is no reason not to order Trophy for the current vehicles in operation given the circumstance, and still develop the Raytheon system for the future.

Better them than me. Of course it wouldn't matter when you got a RPG heading your way, pretty much wounding anybody who are near the vehicle.
