but.. if it owuld be possible i think there should also be Subforums of this Poetry forum...

a place to post topics for

þMeanings/Symbologies

a place for
þMotives behind written work

a place for
þMembers work

and a place for
þdiscussion of poets themselves

~~Sad lil Alex

I SUPPORT THIS IDEA 100%...

The Poetry Forum idea has legs, SLA, and I believe it may cross that finish line in a week or so.

Nice one ducky, i think a poetry forum is a great idea.

Really Bad Poetry needs to be a sub forum though.
Just for me.

When this forum gets off the ground, all the topics mentioned by SLA and m4s can be discussed in threads, rater than create an entire plethora of new subforums.

Meanings/Symbologies
Motives behind written work
Members work
discussion of poets themselves

AND

Really Bad Poetry will all be subjects for discussion.

I always had a love for what is termed 'Purple Poetry'

I would say,
we could find a way,
to make it so,
so here we go.

Fantastic idea Ducky! I am glad to see it was gotten the seal of approval. I have a couple I have written that I would be glad to donate to the forum when it gets up and running.

We could also add song lyrics in there too. Songs are poetry. Well some of them anyway.

As you look through past postings in both Short Stories and Collaborative Fiction, you will find numerous threads of poetry.

When the new forum is available (in a week or so), I will personally search through both and transfer them into the new forum.

My own 'Ghost Lodge' poems will be transferred there as well.

Let there be light.

i broke my back in half the last time i tried to laugh
split my sides wide open heres to high hoping
my broken ocean turns crimson king regal
fly like an eagle with wings for the people
sing for the feeble and scream for the evil
screen the sequel and weep for the sheeple
all days fade the same way
each and every treasured second
let pieces crumble from above
let peace begin with the dove
my olive branch tantric fantasy
my solid trance mantra apathy
if i wake before this is over it never happened
if i cant caption my own headline im fine with dying
i can relocate my conciousness if need be
i can let this body go and keep floating
show me the path my god my kingdom
make me a real boy
wish upon a star
piss upon the scar
i would gladly obliterate all of us to stop the suffering

Dispatch The Troops

Daughter of Zion
Once precious princess
Left her father's house
To walk the streets that never rest
Maybe they'll hear me in the metropolis
So I'm sending out and SOS
Fighting with her "ta"
She wants out of this mess
And those big city lights
Might brighten up the darkness
You know that I'm tired and you know that I'm stressed
You can't stop me and you can't stop this
You could call the police try to make an arrest
Today is the day that I repossess
Leaving on the first bus that I can get
Now its rings around the eyes sopping wet from rain droplets
Window shopping for some solace
No address and penniless
Thats the price you pay from running away from the stress
Feeling the pain likes the dance by the DJ
Reminds me of a time when things were OK
Frightened by her own shadow
Now she wants to go home
Many names for one God
Trotting on through the facade
You were all my children
Got a dig for that feeling
Love will break through the concealment
Strip away the serpents skin
We came to win
Dispatch the troops
Send out the captain
My gem is held captive in the dungeon
Don't come back again until you end the mission
If it takes a long time
Don't lose the vision
If you're stuck
Check the blueprint
Look within
Reflection
Got to find the rhythm
Won't you please return child
Where you been?
She says I can't come home because he won't let me in
And besides we don't need no more friction
Used to look so nice how'd you get so thin?
With a heart of ice it's a heart of sin
Skin white like a ghost with a pale complexion
Pray to God for the dead we need resurrection
Don't you know wherever you go thick and thin
You are still my children
Since you've been gone my soul's been hurting

A fine poem, certainly, but your post is an example of what shouldn't happen.

I note that you added the author of the poem, but left out the 'ex' tags which indicate that the poem was a cut/paste from another website which you did not provide a link to.

Also, you provided no commentary on the poen itself.

What prompted you to pick this particular poem? How did it move you? Did you like it or hate it?

After seeing the music link edited into the top of the poem, it brings up another point.

There is currently a forum dedicated to music in BTS;

www.belowtopsecret.com...

Which is where such live links belong.

However, if there are lyrics which you would like to DISCUSS, I think they belong in the Poetry forum.

If members wish to post lyrics, then another T&C rule comes into play;

1b.) Profanity: You will not use profanity in our forums, and will neither post with language or content that is obscene, sexually oriented, or sexually suggestive nor link to sites that contain such content.

A poem by a guy who's surname is Merwin
wrote a poem which seems to disclose secretive
behaviour
as yet unreported, of a mining company.
It was in the 'Poetry Now' quarterly, a few issues ago,
it would be good to reproduce it, but sitting in
an internet cafe that would strain my memory impossibly.
Even although there is Merwin stuff findable on the net
haven't found this rather political Poetry Now one.
He lets the reader know that the mining company
had assured a local community it would curtail its
mining projects, but his adolescent experience that
he's thinking back on was "hearing the tick tick tick of the
picks in the night and the occasional muffled thud";
the company had lied, and had proceeded
with clandestine excavations.
So the Topic: A Poem We've Discovered
Revealing a Secret Someone Would
Rather We Did Not Know

How does that grab you guys - an intra-thread -
Poetically Revealed Secrets
I also think a mysterious poem in
the magazine called Magma was
about one of those guys that died
and is claimed to have been
suicided, and the poet knew
the suicide personally, takes
it as suicide, but you feel like
your personal conclusion is, he
surely didn't just do that. Obviously
to reproduce these poems for the
contemplation of you guys would be
best, but my stuff's really disorganised.
The editor of Magma did particularly pick
up on that poem in his editorial introduction,
it's just got a really mysterious vibe.

Hmmm... a poet who exposes conspiracies. Now that would be an ATS poet for sure.

Lots online about this highly liked poet:

His accomplishments;

WS Merwin is one of the most distinguished American poets at work today. His innovative style in The Lice and The Carrier of Ladders (for which he won the Pulitzer Prize) was hugely influential on his contemporaries and his work as a translator is itself a remarkable achievement.

And, a sample of his work;

Recognitions
by W. S. Merwin

Stories come to us like new senses

a wave and an ash tree were sisters
they had been separated since they were children
but they went on believing in each other
though each was sure that the other must be lost
they cherished traits of themselves that they thought of
as family resemblances features they held in common
the sheen of the wave fluttered in remembrance
of the undersides of the leaves of the ash tree
in summer air and the limbs of the ash tree
recalled the wave as the breeze lifted it
and they wrote to each other every day
without knowing where to send the letters
some of which have come to light only now
revealing in their old but familiar language
a view of the world we could not have guessed at

but that we always wanted to believe

My favourite contemporary poet is Christopher Dewdney and one of his best known works is a poem called Demon Pond from a book of the same name.

Demon Pond
Christopher Dewdney

From: Demon Pond. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1994.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Demon Pond

You step into the crucible,
the philosophical egg, vessel
of the sun and moon. The surface
of this liquid
intersects your thigh
like a bracelet
of exaltation. Matter itself
ringing out a single
clear note.

You step into the water,
indigenous, exquisite.
Your quick grace alive
wire, eerie where I falter
in sweet sickness.
Stirring up the dreams
at the bottom of the pond.
Every gesture, the most incidental
of your movements is slender,
candid. You are perfection
doubled back on itself,
standing before me in this
labyrinthine night forest,
a cool autumn mist
over the water.

Our union is a confederacy
outside the common world.

Each other the most remarkable
being we've ever met, adored
by the adored.
The one for whom
we had abandoned hope
years before.
My mind goes anywhere
my hands and mouth travel
weightless and eager
over your radiant flesh.
Snakes aroused by humans coupling
and hallucinations of unearthly paradise
rise like ghostly moths
to the light we burn by.
Hosts of invisible beings
lap at the fiery column
that is us. Flesh a distraction
on our way to a deeper union.

Your love, your body
the knife that cut me
open to my bliss.

Question: who, or better yet, what is this poet adoring? Is it a human being, his muse (poetry) or language itself?

The Monkey's Memory

Sundown on society

Frowned upon for no notoriety

Hung out to dry just for being

How can you be so blind yet demand that you are all seeing?

New moon in the dark

There is no fire with out that first spark

Lemmings marching to their doom

Insert the key; reset the room

Starless sky above

Still they do not move; even with a hard shove

Comatose and awaiting death

Trapped inside; will they even wake to fight for their final breath?

Serenity bottled for the few

Assume the rest of us never had a clue

There is no bliss trapped inside a gilded cage

Empathy is gone; now we are full of rage

Sundown on society

Erased for our impropriety

They knew what was best and it has caused our demise

The monkey sheds his skin; it was all just an evil disguise

The interest shown in this idea prompts me to bump this up as a reminder.

I hope that such a forum is in the future of ATS.

Masqua...thanks for putting up with me.
You're a wonderful Moderator!!!

I want to see this subject fly!

You and Worldwatcher have been the greatest hosts in our ATS Literary boards!

I know that I've come across as someone: "Clinging to Precious things", yet this IS precious. Not only to me, but other ATS posters.

As you've seen already, there are many poets abounding; some have already 'primed up the ATS BBQ' - We are ALL waiting for definate responses.

We really DO need a Poetry section.

Hi, it's a pity I'm very busy in life.
Maybe someone should investigate poetry
societies in Roswell - did I say that? I had said I
thought that was expressing his emotions re
love-making in the grass with snakes rising
up
the metaphor in my mind was like a snake-charmer's
foot tapping the ground is what actually causes the
cobras to rear up.
But I do think it is a straight-forward love-making memory.
Was it deleted by a moderator? The message isn't
there.....thanx for that one from Merwin, he
really is brilliant.
Maybe after the anti-pollution demo in London on Saturday,
will have more time - is there a thing about people sort
of identifying themselves....?
Someone will have to proactively phone up "Poetry Now"
and say "What was that Merwin poem you guys published?"
