We no longer have a multifasited power base to back up any of our policy and we can only use the threat of force as a reprisal. This is shown out in our war sit. today and is only causing more hatred.

The only remedy is form international communities, strengthen the U.N., or, at least in Europe, form the European Union, creating the confederation. However, nobody wants to do that.

Why would anyone want to strengthen the UN? They are just as impotent as the League of Nation was and they will never be anything but that.

If they ever had any viable use wheather diplomatic, by sanctions, or by force of arms we wouldn't have seen the Yugoslavian thing, Darfur, Korea, Vietnam, Afganistan part 1, Tibet. The list goes on and on.

And woe to the world if the UN ever was powerful enough to police the whole world. Absolute power corrupts absolutlely.

We have enough problems as it is in the US why would we want the UN throwing their weight around in our "soveriegn" country.

it is in the best interest of the west for russia to retain a strong leader like putin, it will be disasterous if russia falls into the wrong hands, both militarily and politicaly russia pose an imence threat in hands of a right wing communist who is not able to control the hard liners in is goverment.
It could lead into a serious situation against the us or the eu who needs russia's gas supply.

Perhap's Putnik just doesn't want foreign currency, especially of the US variety, strengthening the election opponents will to win. Then again, Putnik may be taking every opportunity to smash the US for interfering in it's dealing with Iraq and now possibly Iran. He may even have some troubles with not changing minds on the plan for the Missile Defence plan.

Seems he may know of a mach 9 delivery vehicle in the 'West'that neither Russia nor China can stop or be made aware of before annihilation. The only way he can be a threat is by funding crazies to build nuclear devices that the crazies are ready to use and deliver it under the missile shield i.e.: hand delivery. Seems to me the 'West'won't let Iran get that far and Putin's really pissed about it.
