A letter to Dr. Laura

Topic started on 3-2-2004 @ 11:33 AM by Voice_of Doom

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a U.S. radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific Bible laws and how to follow them:

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality? I don't agree. Can you settle this?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

That's right...eternal and unchanging...eternal and unchanging...eternal and unchanging...unchanging

She is a heinous bigotrous evil woman. I've tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but she's just plain nuts. I am very interested to hear how she would address these questions. She'll probably just laugh it off....when someone gets in her face with stuff like that she just ignores it. She is right and everyone else in the world is wrong.

Must be why her TV talk show was such a success.

You can't own us because the government already does. Besides, we don't do housework. We just make donuts and play hockey.

Dr. Laura is a two-time admitted adulteress, who also posed for a Playboy layout (yucky!)

She is no-one to be talking about morals

I'd like to know (in addition to Dr. Laura) how the religious on ATS respond to this post. Seems like only a few weeks ago or maybe a month that a whole slew of people were quoting this same passage from the bible on the thread "if homosexuality is ok in the eyes of god...". I guess when your wrong your wrong and you just shut up before you look more the fool.

Heh, I like this thread. It always gets to me how people look to the Old Testament to justify....well anything, but they tend to pick and choose which parts to follow. (sigh) Why are people so damn stupid?

I'm a strong feminist, and I could only listen to about 5 minutes of her before I had to turn the show off. She was extremely cruel and brutal to her callers.

LOL, nice one Voice_of doom.

As it is whenever someone tries to justify some type of persecution through the Bible, it is always a case of 'pick and choose'.

The one thing they should do is Live it all or shut the # up.

Even when you pick out the dozen or so passages (like The Earth is fixed on four pillars) that make NO sense to contrast the dozen or so passages people still try to use in modern debate, we all overlook a simple fact...

That the other 98% is meaningless garbage, neither fit to make fun of, nor use in your signature. No offense John 3:16 fans.

I guess that when you can't come back with anything worth while, start calling names. Seems pretty accurate of the religious "nuts". "Death to the infidels"....

Well I don't think homosexuality is mentioned in the Law at all. I translate 18:22 to say: "You shall not lay with children like you lay with your wife. That's an abomination." This is what the verse says anyway. How on Earth it came to mean that gay folks are evil is a mystery to me. So ask her about that too. Why they have translated a word which means children to mean men...... The same word is translated children when it is talked about "the children of Israel" or the "children of God" etc. The word means children, figuratively humans or men.

Edit: And the word often translated womankind or simply women, is not a general word for women, but wives or wife. This verse thereby has nothing to do with homosexual men, but a horrible kind of adultary, even fornication. And with children, so it is also rape.

Blessings,
Mikromarius
