U.S. prison system a costly and harmful failure: report

news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of people in U.S. prisons has risen eight-fold since 1970, with little impact on crime but at great cost to taxpayers and society, researchers said in a report calling for a major justice-system overhaul.

The report on Monday cites examples ranging from former vice-presidential aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby to a Florida woman's two-year sentence for throwing a cup of coffee to make its case for reducing the U.S. prison population of 2.2 million -- nearly one-fourth of the world's total.

Wow one quarter of the worlds prison population resides in US prisons. The land of the free, unless your in prison of course. The prison and prison building in America is considered a growth industry, when most violent crimes is at a 30 to 40 year low.

Prison should be for violent offenders, and reforming our criminal justice system is in order.

And I believe killed the hundreds of thousand on death row quicker and killing those who have life sentences will reduce the numbers, a little bit anyway.

I agree, claiming to be the freest place on the planet while at the same time having the largest prison population is more than a little silly. Violent and nonviolent offenders should be strictly separated. Right now we have a system that acts almost like a training camp for hardcore criminals and a recruiting camp for gangs.

And what is up with those prison gyms & weight rooms?
I don't get it, we give free gym memberships to violent criminals who have nothing to do but work out all day, so we have all these guys getting huge while they wait to get inflicted back on society.

It's almost as if the powers that be wanted to make sure there was a large and well-trained army of violent thugs out there, so the rest of us will gladly sacrifice our liberties to our leaders out of fear.

...Nah, that can't be it...
