Tree Man 'Grew Roots' Out His Hands & Feet

Topic started on 13-11-2007 @ 05:48 PM by Keyhole

This IS weird, and awful for this poor man.

They actually weren't "roots" that were growing out of his limbs, he had a rare condition where his body could not stop or ward off the spread and growth of a form of warts in his body.

Tree man 'who grew roots' may be cured

Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident.

The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.

Here is a picture of his hands.

There are also 3 videos of this poor guy on the link above
Poor guy! I've NEVER seen anything like this.

After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts.

The virus was therefore able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on his hands and feet.

Luckily for this guy Dr. Gaspari has concluded that Vitamin A may be the cure along with freezing some of the wart growths off.

r Gaspari, who became involved in the case through a Discovery Channel documentary, believes that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been shown to arrest the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

"He won't have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands," Dr Gaspari said.

"Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life."

The most resilient warts could then be frozen off and the growths on his hands and feet surgically removed.

At least this poor guy can now recieve some help now.

We here in the US think things are getting SOOOO bad for us now, and then you see someone like this poor guy.

Why, oh why did I have to look at that? It's like the DU babies -- an image that'll stick with your mind, like it or not.... that is truly horrific.

Poor guy,
Hope the treatment works. He must be gutted to learn that all he needed to do was get a load of vitamin A.
I saw this on another website a month or so back and thought it was fake.
Its hard to imagine that sort of thing happening.

Wow, just wow... That is one of the craziest medical problems I've ever seen.

It's a pity that this guy couldn't get help sooner, I used to get plantar warts all the time when I was younger (too much time at the local pool) but they never got too big and were easily removed by a doctors visit or home application of wart remover. Plantar Warts are caused by HPV as well as are most warts I believe, never knew that about vitamin A, guess I should have taken more as well.

It makes me sad that some people cannot get the medical treatment that is needed to live a healthy and happy life. I'm sure if he can just use his hands again, he will be ecstatic. Bravo to the doctor that finally stepped up and is helping him out. Pity it had to get to that point before anyone did though.

I found a follow up news article to this:

Indonesia may stop 'Tree Man' being treated in US: report

An Indonesian villager dubbed "Tree Man" for massive bark-like warts growing on much of his body may be barred from travelling to the United States to receive treatment, a report said Tuesday.

Woody growths entirely cover 32-year-old Dede's hands in long, root-like tendrils that leave him unable to work -- except as a member of a travelling "freak show". He was in a Discovery Channel documentary this month.

"We're clear about not giving them (US doctors) permission to bring Dede to the US," health ministry spokeswoman Lily Sriwahyuni Sulistiyowati was quoted as saying by Warta Kota daily.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

I don't really know what to say, though. I think it should be up to the man to consent or not to the treatment. But in all likelihood, he might not agree to leave with the foreigners anyway as the following paragraph in that article alludes to.
