Oh YEAH!!! I love it! It's about time someone with a bit of clout told him that! Right on! The summit was almost(all?) leftist with other countries represented.
I linked to a post by HellMutt because I think it applies to his thread about funding the terrorism with a lot of help from S. American supporters.

The "shut up" I can't wait for...

Is the one that is going to come from the Venezuelan populace... It will be a welcome sight to see his carcass strung up ala Mussolini in a Caracas street.

Hope you have plenty of time MM. Compare their economic guidance & conditions. With a current account deficit second only to the US, the Spanish hierarchy could find themselves tared & feathered long before the Chavez reign ends.

I saw this on Euronews this morning, and according to what they said this was to be expected, if Chavez knew what he was talking about.

Apparently, Chavez said that the previous Spanish prime-minister, José Maria Aznar, was a fascist and the present prime-minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, was defending his Spanish rival against the attacks of Chavez when the Spanish king said "Why don't you shut up?" to Chavez.

After the Spanish civil war, Spain was under a fascist dictatorship for more than 30 years, and the king of Spain at the time, the father of Juan Carlos, was forced to leave the country.

Juan Carlos lived in Portugal (also a fascist dictatorship at the time) for many years, returning to Spain only after General Franco's death, and according to Franco's law of succession became King of Spain.

Calling someone that is not present to defend himself and who was democratically elected a fascist in front of two people that lived under a fascist regime will make that effect on almost anyone.

My attempt to translate what was said

We may be in the antipodes of ideological positions, and I am not close to Aznar's position, but the ex-president (of government) was elected by the Spanish people, and I demand, I demand,

(here the Spanish king also interrupts and says, apparently, "You", to which Zapatero answers, "a little moment")

I demand, I demand that respect and for one more reason

(answering something said by Chavez but I could not ear "of course, of course" when the Spanish king interrupts against with "Why don't you shut up?". After some time of Chavez speaking Zapatero continues)

President Hugo Chavez, president Hugo Chavez, I think there is one essence and a principle in dialogue, and that is that to respect and have respect we should try not to fall in disrespect.

I am sure that someone who really speaks Castellano would make a better translation than a Portuguese, but that is what I can do.

Sorry to burst the bubble but, If the mighty America President can not tell Chavez to shup up how a Spanish king will accomplish that.

I just going to laugh about it.

Perhaps Spain should start invading the Americas again and like that it will make sure Chavez will shup up

The summit was the Ibero-American summit, so those were leaders of the Latin American countries plus Portugal and Spain.

Both the Spanish and Portuguese prime-ministers are Socialists, the Portuguese president is (maybe) centre-left, and the Latin American presidents and prime-ministers have many leftists among them, but in this case it was a leftist defending a right-wing politician from another leftist attacks.

He did said "Why don't you shut up", but the result was the same, maybe if we could get Chavez mother to tell him to shut up he would obey.

Hi gang

The king said "Y tú por qué no te callas"

The king said: And you why don´t you shut up!

This can have a double meaning like; Look who´s talking

If he would have said "Por que no te callas" ; Why don´t you shut up it would have been sufficient. Adding the "Y tú" could be more of an accusation, like; look who´s talking or clean up your own #.

Anyway chavez took it real bad and is now talking about colonial practices ,and what does the king of spain think etc
Chavez WAS right Aznar IS a facist. However Spains people got rid of him as soon as he showed his true color. Zapatero is the best!!!

Take care
