Ya know what bugs me (that makes this whole post my opinion, I guess) is that America nurtures and raises it's young people on violence and mayhem,
i.e. Tom and Jerry, Yu-Gi-Oh, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, etc. and trains them through video games and TV, i.e. SOCOM, Resident Evil, Grand Theft
Auto, etc. to be aggressive and ruthless, THEN, after all that multi-media imput, glorifies the violence in YouTube and MySpace via home-made videos
of the "girl-fights" and "anti-social" behavior. Then, we focus all the news on how many horrible things happened around the country and how
people are so shocked that people can be such monsters!
Don't get me wrong, humans are the most aggressive and violent species on Earth. Violence is expected. But to nurture the ability to BE violent and
then show shock at the result is all part of the desensitizing project I believe may be taking place.
T.V. shows are increasingly more focused on sex. That's increasingly apparent. Especially shows geared towards teens. I see shows that clearly
exploit it. I also see T.V. as the "Social Medium" indicator.
Then, there are the shows "Cops", "Scariest Police Chases" and "Tales from the Highway Patrol" that push the idea that the cops are trained to
always win. They never show the flip-side where, for example, Chicago cops burst into bars, shake down patrons and start handcuffing suspects and then
lie on reports as to the details of the incidents. They never will either, it's counterproductive to their message that cops are benevolent
justice-seekers.
Advertisements are getting there too. The newest commercial for the Chevy Malibu is a scene where bankrobbers run out of a bank and jump into a
competitor's car just as all the cop cars come screeching to a halt all around the bankrobbers car. The robbers have their hands up and are ready to
surrender, when, all the officers go running past them and enter the bank, guns drawn. The robbers calmly drive away. "A car you'll notice"... I
get it.
Although, I have to admit, I like the new bra commercial with Jennifer Love-Hewwit running around in a bra, but, I'm an adult. Seeing it while kids
and their parents are watching TV together around prime-time is kinda dicey and desensitizing us to make sex "Just another thing".
Do I have to go on about Enzyte commercials? My 9-year-old daughter whistles right along with them. Just like I grew up with Empire Carpet's jingle
and phone number. (Five-eight-eight, two-three-hundred, EM-PIIIRRE.)
Back on the topic and how it applies to all this.
Ya push violence, strife, sex, drugs, guns, war, espionage, law enforcement, political extremism, crime and everything else we might call "freedom of
media", you're going to MAKE people embrace these qualities. Then in order to "Protect" us from such results, they need a bill such as this. To
deal with the result...they created.
That's just the T.V.!?!? What about the internet and what we see here? What could all this instant-information inspire in humans?
I gotta stop or I'll go on all day.
All of this is my opinion by the way. My observations and comment.
My $.02
