Before I throw in my two cents, I just want to say that the OP did a great job summing things up.

For the sake of brevity and to make my point, let me turn the question around and ask "Why is America not hated much more than it is?" This is a very important way of looking at the hate/America issue.

America is not hated more than it is because it is very slick at doing the things that generate hatred.

It almost invariably uses proxies.

Just like Tom Sawyer, America finds suckers to do it's dirty work. Unlike Tom, who was interested in painting a fence and who was undoubtedly praised highly when the job was done (by other boys), America is interested in wrecking the fence, breaking all the windows in the house and taking over the property from the legit home owner, turning the homeowner's daughters into hookers and forcing the homeowner to let hooligans live on the property so they can start wrecking the property two doors down.

If you want to find people who hate America, just make some Latin American friends. Personally, I know a guy from Columbia who absolutely loathes the Americans. Look at the bloody history of Chile. Look at the history of Cuba.

I could go into a lot of detail here about death squads and the CIA, etc, but people can find great videos on the web about the "Third World War", that is, the war on the poor people of the "third world" being prosecuted by the United States.

Propping up dictators, pulling down democratically elected leaders who work for their people, and perpetrating carnage on a large scale is why America is hated around the third world.

But it doesn't stop there. America is two faced and unreliable. No-one makes a commercial deal or treaty with America in confidence that America will live up to it's commitments. Don't fool yourselves America, rushing in to uphold your obligations to some cut-throat doesn't make you look honorable in the eyes of the world.

America is innovative in villainy. They can have a palace coup, like the one that replaced Kennedy with Johnson, but unlike tin pot juntas around the world, the American junta doesn't puff up it's chest, throw a parade and flaunt how macho they were in changing the regime.

They've invented a new kind of coup,a new kind of magic. "Presto-regime-change-o!" The beauty is that the audience doesn't think anything really scary has happened.

They do a lot of things that way. The criminal use of the World Bank has been written about in recent times. Debt, extortion, confiscation around the world. "Presto-resources-change-o!"

America's greatest triumph since WW2? Concealing it's villainy. Unfortunately, people are waking up around the world and realizing what has been going on. That's why America is hated.

Note: I don't hate America. My grandmother was American. I have cousins in America. I love all the great things about America, but that is not what this thread is about.

This is definitely a nice thread topic. The questions you ask about why is there a certain amount of hatred for the United States of America really have no definite answer. The hatred is different for each and every party involved in such animosity.

I can speak from experience of having personally travelled overseas. Everyone I have come across has really held an interest in talking to me, and for many of these individuals I was quite the curisoity as having been the very first American they ever met in person. Many of them have met English speaking individuals before, and so the first thing they often noted was "Where might you be from? You speak a different kind of English". When they learned of my hailing from America they acted very curious, and very delighted.

Now obviously this is not true of the feelings in all parts of the world, but for the most part, even when debating politics, these individuals were extremely polite, and most certainly willing to listen to my points of view. We even found many common grounds for which we both shared extreme interests, and thus really hit it off.

This of course is not always the case, as one time many years ago a relative of mine was travelling through Bastogne, Belgium. They walked into a shop to look around, and when they attempted to ask a question of the shopkeeper he said "Ah American!", and brushed them off only to walk away towards the back of the shop and remain there. This of crouse really P.O.'d my relative as having grown up through WWII he knew the sacrifices that countless Americans made in order to save and liberate this tiny hamlet from the Nazis.

What is the lesson here? The lesson is that you can take part in any number of positive acts, even giving up your life for someone, and there will still be somebody who resents you.

As for these dictators and terrorists, the biggest reason they truly hate America is that it threatens their power grip. Thay may shout rhetoric about how immoral America is, or how Americans are some sort of occupiers, but in all reality this is simply their form of propaganda. Think of Adolf Hitler, how did he unite the Nazis? He made baseless claims against Jews being responsible for the suffering German economy, and thus formed a symbol for the Nazis to unite against, and take their anger out on. This is the same with the Dictators and Terrorists, they need a common symbol for their followers to unite against, and since America remains the single greatest threat to these individuals, they decide to use the U.S. as their poster child. They are also dead set against Democracy because this ideology in of itself is an extreme threat to their power grip. If the Democratic process should ever take place in the areas where Dictators and Terrorists reign supreme, they will become deposed of, and lose all of their ruling power.

It does not matter how nice you are, or how caring you appear to be, because someone out there will still hate you. Look at God for instance, the reverance of all major religions of this World. I guarantee you that you can find people who hate God. If this revered being can also be hated, then who is truly immune from the disease of hatred? No one.

I do not think the world hates us in its entirety. As a matter of fact I still feel that the majority of the world admires many of the endeavours that the United States undertakes. We contribute more aid to the third world the the rest of the countries on Earth combined. We feed, cloth, educate, vacinate and facilitate the fostering of better conditions for many of the world's underprivledged. Does this offset the 'ills' that some people feel we may or may not perpetrate on othes? Perhaps. It is subjective and only you can answer that for yourself.

I for one feel that if it were not for the United States acting as the 'world's police'-as the OP said- there would be much many more issues for the reluctant rest of the world to cope with. For example; many do not realize that if it were not for the United States Navy patrolling the world's oceans that piracy, which is still a problem in many places, would be a rampent issue.

I have travelled to many countries and have met many wonderful people, who, in addition to a love of their own homeland, have nothing but praise for the United States. I have, in my travels, met those who are not enamored of our foriegn policy descions, but what American approves of all of an adminstrations choices in all policies?

I do not feel that to judge the inherent charity, kindness, genorousity and overall goodwill of the American people by its leaders foriegn policy descions is the correct way to base your sentiments on the country. Perhaps I am being a bit Pollyanish, but I do love my country and am first and foremost a patriot. Does that mean I support everything we do? No. Does that mean I always feel we can do good? Yes.

There is no reason why countries with equal or better standards of living than your country should be jealous of your country.

Furthermore, don't be ignorant of the foreign policy that your country (in fact the corporations aided by the government) have waged in other (especially third world) countries. I've mentioned economic hitmen a billion times here on ATS, read about it.

But this is something that the majority of western countries have done for decades in third world countries. Not only the U.S..

at the risk of getting myself more hated than i have already experienced but am getting "used to" i can give you a scriptural answer as to why the usa----------which i love by my experiences there----why the world hates the usa.the tribes of israel became 13 in number when jacob/israel adopted the 2 sons of joseph and gave them the major portion of the birthright blessings aquired thru his father isaac and abraham.judah/jews did not aquire it all.the prophecy is --genesis49:22 joseph is a fruitful bough by a spring its branches run over a wall the archers bitterly attacked him and shot arrows at him and harassed him but his bow remained firm and his arms were agile from the hands of the Mighty One of jacob(they are given military power more than the world has ever seen)from there is the Shepherd the Stone of israel (thru judah) from the G-D of your father who helps you and by the Almighty Who blesses you with blessings of heaven above with blessings of the deep that lies beneath blessings of the breasts and of the womb the blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills ,may they be on the head of joseph and on the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.--------G-D would be a liar if He did not fullfill prophecy for the usa and britain the two brothers and sons of joseph.they are hated out of jealousy and resentment of all that G-D has given to them just like josephs own brothers sold him into egypt for their jealousy.this blessing is also conditional on josephs children obeying G-D since our people refuse to obey the One that gave these blessings He will remove them till we are beaten down by our enemies and repent-before they are restored again.

Hate is a bit of an overstatement to use on everyone with a gripe against the states.

I feel there is numerous factors as to why people dont like Americans in some way or another.

If you want to play world leader then expect backlash and blame.
After all to those on the outside only see America gaining from invading countries and then we see pictures of dirty, dying and malnourished children as the effects of war, It doesn't take too much of a heart to feel sorry for the orphaned Iraqi child with missing arms and look on in disgust at troops sat around smoking and laughing, this may be far from the truth but blame the media for incriminating the troops, not us the viewer for believing it.

To be honest it doesnt matter if its Bush, Gore, or who ever is president, who ever takes that job is going to be criticised endlessly.
I hear people praise Maggie Thatcher and how things have gone downhill since she left, fact is people forget. 10 years from now people will say how great Tony Blair was. On the same note I hear people who claim Clinton was great too.
Its a job with a lot of burdens.

Arrogance. Far too many times as a Brit I've heard things like "you would be speaking German if it wasn't for us!".
We don't like Americans claiming all the glory for WW2 when they arrived late and fresh and only once they was dragged in after being attacked themselves.
Remember that the battle of Britain was fought and won by the British whilst the yanks (not meant offensively) was sat at home.
Britain had a thousand September 11ths every day during this time.

Football, Soccer is football, foot kicks balls, foot dribbles ball, foot tackles ball therefore football, change the glorified rugby you call football and rename it as handball or something.

The world according to Americans seem to consist of 90% USA, (including Canada and Mexico (the extras states).
Then there is London, Paris, Italy, Germany, European country, Asia, a cluster of islands called muslim countries and Australia.

Claiming to invent everything.

Britain being Americas lapdog and guinea pig.

Paris Hilton.

Remember these are tongue in cheek and to be honest most of it is Americans who just think that everyone hates them when in fact the average person is too busy enjoying The Simpsons, Hollywood movies, American pop stars, American star gossip and such.
I wouldn't worry about it because at the end of the day nobody is in their motherland, chances are my descendents lived next door to yours.

Furthermore, don't be ignorant of the boatloads of foreign aid we provide and the fact that the world would be much worse off without us.

I would call your attention to this document....Foriegn Aid: An Introductory Overview of U.S. Programs ans Policy and particularly this part of it.

In FY2004, roughly 87%... of military aid financing will be used for procurement of U.S. military equipment and training...

Food assistance commodities are purchased wholly in the United States, and most expenditures for shipping those commodities... go entirely to U.S. freight companies... A rough estimate suggests that more than 90% of food aid expenditures will be spent in the United States...

81% of total USAID procurement between October 2002 and September 2003 under these programs came from U.S. sources.

I'm in Canada and here people hates your country because of:

- Your foreign policy over the last 60 years
- Your president
- Your ignorance
- Your bible-belt crowd/religion extremism/religion-oriented laws
- Your guns (I don't agree with them)
- The way you think of yourselves as the savior of the world
- Americans corporations buying everything around the world to centralize and close little corporations, like Wal-Mart, Microsoft, Starbucks, ect... the way you ``put under capitalism`` other countries by buying everything from the little people to put under big business
- Blind patriotism to the leader and the ``present NOT capitalist system``, when you try to explain something bad about their country, they scream ``anti-american`` or liberal or terrorist supporter...

That's pretty much sums it. Most people don't know that a lot of americans are good people and despise the same things about their country than foreigners. When people talk about the US, they talk mostly about the president, the war-mongerers and the americans globalists, not main-stream americans .

And I've seen a lot of these threads on internet where americans believed that all the hate aimed at their country was aimed at themselves, but not at entities inside the USA.

So when someone is saying screw the US, he's saying screw the Bush administration and his corporate buddies and whoever supports it.

America, the world warns you, the real ennemies of the world and your own ennemies are not in the middle-east or in China, they are within the US itself.

I begrudge no one the hatred of our Gov't- nor 'our corporations. they've been screwing US for decades (actually I think they've been screwing US since the beginning of the 'industrial age' We got a reprieve when the Unions broke through, now just as corrupt & useless). No doubt they've been doing the same- and worse to those who live in countries who want to improve the citizens standard of living. We were great poster children for Industrialization and Multi national Corporation ( we convince the rest of the world they were good things). Now they have sucked this nation dry and have intentional undermined any concepts that would keep US on the map ( We are Number 1 in NOTHING-education,Household income (overall), healthcare, infant mortality rate, longevity... nothing). They have cheated & stole from the American Worker and assured there'd be no real economy for the next generation ( yet saddled them with debt). they have squelched all new innovations- noteable alternative fuel. We have a wealth or talent and brains in this country- but no real assistance in launching new small business- just baling out the Mega industries (insurance/ Banks...). they have just about run US into the ground- time to saddle a new national Horse to ride hard and put away dead.
We must explain to the World THEY are Not US. They are Corporationist who infiltate countries and pilfer the treasure chest. They're Con artists, and it looks like the United Arab Em. is their next Mark. But I think these boys are old hands at this type of 'friendship'- scratch my back & I'll scratch yours- or I might just stick a knife in it instead. Corp may have bite off more than they can chew on that one.
Here's something You can do......

Request the UN levy War Crime Charges against all the Architects (but inparticualr- Cheney).
Reques tthe UN send an envoy to monitor and verify our '08 election results.
In '08 voe for any non pro- politician- housewives, MDs, janitors- anything but a Dum & Repug.
We have not only been deceived, we are still being Betrayed.
Our Congress has already stated it won't remove this administration- so they are complicite and are not to be given any credance. They have given US no choice but to ask for help. We must show the World Who We Are... We're just like them with a crappy Gov't and greedy 'business' men-I guarantee they've got a few of their own- their parasites of Humanity. they are often found in conjunction with 'Ordained' facists spewing hate and fear. Only one"Horseman" missing... the Village Idiot- oops got that too MSM- that makes four. The Four institutions we created, which defines 'civilization' have turned to monsters. thes eare mere instituions/bricks and words. Only because WE call them powerful are they. Only because We believe they are smarter, better, holier do they hold any power over us. We're being held prisoner by our of hand.
When all else fails, and 'conventional wisedom' shows no results- it's time to do something unexpected, outrageous, unthinkable, denied. Who'd guess we'd have the confidence to ask for help from the rest of the World. Who would guess we would show such Humility. We were Wrong (well at least those who voted for the fiends)- regardless we allowed our gutteral reaction to take over and allowed ourselves and the world to be raped. What better way to show true leadership as people under a United Melting pot. What better demonstration of a true Democracy? Or Integrity and Honor. I see no loss of face- that happened 7 yrs ago. things aren't always as they might appear- What could be seen as a weakness may actually be the exhibition of true strength. We literally have a Toy Box at their disposal that WE are responsible for. time to Buck Up !
