CNN is reporting things are getting much worse.

Fires burn 1,300 homes, threaten 72,000 more

This is unbelievable. As someone already said, this is another Katrina in the making.

Good luck xxblackoctoberxx, and all of SoCal. All of us at ATS are pulling for ya.

Just wanted to let you know that prayers from family members are being sent out to you in California, I have spoken with a entire chain of family members from all over the country, and we all are glued to the tv and are with you. Please remember to call 1-800-REDCROSS to register for friends and family members who may be worried and just unable to get in touch with you. The lines are getting over loaded and yet they can always find your name and the fact you are safe through 1-800-REDCROSS.

Light , healing and peace.

My Aunt who is a bit connected , lives in the Santa Ana area and said that the Marines at Camp Pendelton told Bush to kiss their ass and took controll on their own! Wow. Now that is a promising turn of events!
GO first responders!
Go Marines!

Ok, I'm back online on my phone! Looks like good news and bad news.

Where I live in Poway they have lifted the evacuation for most of the town and they have completely lifted our neighbor town, Scripps Ranch. I still have my car packed up because the winds can pick up anytime, but for now it looks good. I took some pictures of the flames coming down the hill down the way from me which I will post when I have access to a computer.

The bad news...

So the evacuation toll is up to 513,000 last I heard. 22 injuries and one death I believe. Another random fire has started at Palomar Mountain and is still small but is spreading. The Harris fire is still going strong and a ton of people are still being evacuated.

Right now I'm just going to sit tight, it looks like the worst for my area is over so I will be keeping the other who have lost their homes or are evacuated in my thoughts.

I'm here in South Orange County, the restaurant I work at is Mimi's in Laguna Niguel. My manager told me today Mimi's is sending out a bunch of sandwiches and stuff to help the displaced.

Driving to work today, A huge plume of dark gray smoke was clearly visible from I-5, No less than 15 miles away. Very ominous looking. My car was also covered with a thin but very visible layer of soot when I went to start it.

I live very near the coast, so I don't anticipate a problem here, thankfully. My prayers and vibrations go out to the displaced. May the light of god flow as it will.

Thanks, XX, for the news and update. My husband used to live in Poway and San Diego and can't believe how bad the situation is in So Cal. We keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

While one may not be effected directly by fire, if a power line or cell phone tower burns, then gas can't be pumped, money can't be gotten through an ATM, or cell phones could be useless in that area. If running water requires electricity to pump and the power is out, then a source of water to fight the fire is gone.

I search my growing memory of life in California for any fire situation like this one but find nothing to compare! It's a multiple of catastrophies. It's the perfect firestorm.

Keep safe

I have been keeping my eye on this and my prayers go out to all of you on the west coast.

I saw they were using the San Diego Stadium to house people.
I hope the fires stay away.

Stay safe, and may the winds die down and the rains come!.

Man stay safe and good luck. BTW, the Bush Administration started those fires. Next they are going to say illegal aliens did it so we can go to war with mexico, and make that country a state.

My heart goes out to all of you in California
I used to live in Riverside awhile back and know what those Sant Ana winds feel like. I've never had to go through any fires or evacuations. Please be safe and help anyone you can. Please think about all the fire fighters who are out there in the heat fighting a wild fire that's not meant to be fought by firemen. They are doing the best they can and deserve the best from everyone there.

I thought you guys would like to see what the sky looks like from outside my workplace. I live in the north end of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles county. Keep in mind when you look at these photos that I live about 20 miles from the nearest fire so you could imagine what is going on all over southern California.

North, South, East, and West -- every direction you look is covered in dark grey. These photos don't really do justice to what the sky looks like, since they were taken with my cell phone. The sun is a fiercely burning orange and looks like it is on fire.

And in case you're wondering, there is not a cloud in the sky. The wind over the past 72 hours has ranged from 15 to 100 m.p.h. which is why there are no clouds. Everything you see in these photos is smoke.

Click on the thumbnails to view the photos.

My prayers go out to all the families in crisis right now. It is a miracle that only 2 people have died directly from the fire so far (and 5 elderly people died of natural causes after they were evacuated from their homes).

I have a brother in Solano Co., 1 in Del Mar and 1 in Orange Co. Does anyone know anything about these areas?
I don't want to tie up any phone lines, when there are folks who are making emergency calls.
Please, pray for my brothers and my mother, who is in a rest home in San Diego Co.
My sympathies to all of the displaced people, and those who are in danger, in the rest of So. Cal. I am praying for all of you.

I was thinking the same thing, I've lived here most of my life and we always get some fires, but I cant remember anything of this magnitude. I think the most significant thing is how many there are and how they all sprang up within like a day.

forestlady- Here are the google maps of the fire areas.

For now it looks like the fires northern edge starts around the Camp Pendleton marine base, extending south all the way to the Mexican border. Mostly scrub land, good tinder. Here's a picture of my little brother at Pendleton when he was in the young marines. (I was thoroughly displeased with his mother for putting him in that automaton program.)

Most of the surrounding area looks just like that, lots of dry brush. We should be ok, this is like hurricanes in Kansas or floods in Louisiana, expected. Lets just hope it doesn't get any more severe.

I'm in So. Orange County - about 3 miles from the Irvine/Santiago fire. It was 97 degrees today and super-dry and windy. We're safe, but many of my neighbors are not - in fact I'm not sure where many of them are right now.

Looks like the fire crews and air drops have got a handle on things for now (at least in my neck of the woods), and the wind has died down. But the news is bad around me, esp. San Diego County.

Locally, the sirens have been blaring non-stop. everything is covered in soot and ash, the sky is a dingy brown, and you can see an orange flickering against the smoke in the foothills.

If the wind stays relatively calm through the night (oh, geez, not another nightfall like the last two, please) and the temperatures go down a bit we might get some breaks in the morning.

The kids all have to stay indoors, and all sports activities, etc. have been canceled. Breathing is tough, esp. after three days of walking and living through this thick smoke.

I'm doing some volunteer work with the Forest Service tomorrow - so may not check in back here till the evening.

Anyway - thanks for all your thoughts and good wishes, my friends. We'll at through this (at least most of us will...).

Yeah, it sucks. I think I'll go outside and have a smoke. Literally.

Hey, when you go to volunteer tomorrow, tell Smokey to knock the crap off! I know what he's up to!

Wow. That poster works on so many levels. Pretty damn profound actually.

I worked today, and noticing a lot of people are complaining about headaches, sinus problems, bloody noses etc.......another unfortunate side effect of smoky skies, and very low humidity....:-(

Another interesting thing I hear yesterday: Several "lowrisk" prisoners are helping out in the Malibu fire.......We'll see how long they last before they bail. Just what we need, some raving lunatic inmates roaming the streets.

ya,its pretty bad in CA right now. I used to live in L.A and then Pomona before moving 100 miles north to bakersfield. Those santa ana winds are no joke. Even worsened by the all the canyons and valleys. Luckily, the winds have been blowing the smoke out over the pacific. But i dont expect that to last. The zaca fire had us covered in ash and smoke for weeks. Nothing like looking up where the sun should be and you cant see it.

All in all,i think CA is handling this a lot better than most thought we would. i.e emergency response/shelter setups.

I used to live in Solano County which is north of San Francisco. Do you mean Solana Beach? If so, it looks like the evacuation has been lifted for that area as well as for Del Mar.

Solana Beach evacuation notice lifted
Del Mar evauation notice lifted

The only thing I could find for Orange County evacuation was for the area of Modjeska Canyon

Hope this helps.
