God, it's hot.
My socks are wet, boots
drenched in sweat.
I remember cologne.
Heh. Sweet memories.

Got an FNG today.
Cpl. Jones.
Black dude, but he's a likeable
guy.
His MOS is comm, but give him
a map, and the 6 dig. grid coord's
roll off his tongue.

This guy is amazing.

Midnight. Long-ass day.
Jones called in a strike that smooth
saved our asses.
The "blackies" put ordinance right on
his mark.
About 150 meters from us.

The stench was horrible, but the guns
were silenced.

Found some decent chow in the rubble.

Two days later.
Heavy mortars from the East.
Why the F*** are they aiming at us ?
Why can't it just be groundies.
Much easier.

We're getting hammered.
Been 3 hours, now.
Only 8 of us left.
Where the Hell are the Blackies ?
Called target 2 hours ago.

Jones walks up, with a map, and his
radio.
And, his wicked-evil grin. (God, I
love his attitude)

We talk. I disagree. He says he's going
to do as he wants. Says he can eliminate
the big guns.

I ask him why he even wants to try.
He pulls up his t-shirt.
My God. Jones is more gangster, than
anyone I've ever known.
He has the tats to prove it.

I hang my head. Jesus, I hate this f'ing
job.
I mutter "ok", as a round lands a few
yards away.

He takes off at a jog, and disappears
into the jungle.

I get my radio on, and tune to our deploy
freq.
I hear Jones calling a strike.
On himself.

Oh, Goddamn...Jones...you f'ing idiot...

Blackies streak over.
They wreak the chaos they were designed
for.

Silence.
God, I hate silence.

Next day, we looked over the area.
Found Jones' tags.
Headed back to Home Base.
Reported our situation.

A week later, I get a comm.
Jones was given a MoH, postH.

What a waste.

My Lord, what a waste.
