I don't think this will happen in 50 years or 100 years.. something major in robotics would have to occur to make this leap, plus, who wants to copulate with a robot?? not me... give me the real thing!

Honestly its all about AI, if a robot obtained a level of intellect that made people believe it to be human in emotion and thought, then robot mates would happen. However, we also have to accept that the lines drawn defining rights of the robots would change.

Would it be fair to handicap a robot AI with forcing it to like an individual by hard coding it, this goes against free will, a very important thing that makes us free and human. Robots would have full ability to chose there partners and would not have slave status in a just and free society. (unlike the robots of today that search for rich husbands)

At the time that AI would make a robot mate possible, we would also have to free the robot mate to make its own choices.

So the world of robot women will be the one of us getting shut down at the bar by them just like we do today by the real women
Well I actually do OK, some times

I just thought about it, wasn't this point addressed in the film and its remake, Stepford Wives.

hm... actually this is an interesting thread. This reminds me of 'blade runner', which is an awesome movie and one of my favorites.

If they ever created a robot with that level of intelligence and human emotion, I could see this happening.

What is even more interesting are the implications for society in general. Doesn't this imply that humans will be obsolete, what is the need for us anymore if robots have reached a certain intellectual level that may surpass our own? ... tricky issue..

It's happening right now:

www.androidworld.com...

I guess there are advantages to a woman that has sex any time you want, waits on you hand and foot and then if you want you can just tell her to go stand in the closet while you and your friends watch the game. No bitching or complaining, no spending your money on 200 pairs of shoes, no time of the month, no where the hell have you been!

Now, on the other side of things people could get so jaded by these robots that they never even try to get a real partner. You think there's an obesity problem now, wait until you can look, feel, or do anything you want and your partner tells you you are great anyway?

There's a bad side to everything.

No man will marry a robot.

Nope. Mackin' it digitally means you turn her into a "ho-bot," and re-invest your earnings to build up your stable.

besides, the thing will cost the price of a house by then. Are you going to take on a thirty year loan, merely to sit around and watch her push a vacuum? Of course not.

She can peddle her bod all night. Then work as a diagnostic tool down at Moe's garage in the afternoon, and then come home and give you the business before bed.

Ho-bots are the future man.

You really don't know how crazy humanity is then do you? People marry their pet dogs and I've even seen horses married with full bridal gowns!

Trust, me. You can never say never when humans are concerned. A few loose screws 'up stairs' and anythings possible.

!st off,
Scientists are growing body parts and flesh in petri dishes. By then it would be simple enough to have a bionic-robot that has the skeleton made of designed parts, brain is the operating system, but flesh, breats, vagina, and buttocks would be all composed of real living flesh...

Perfect bodies, no saggage anywhere, updatable software, interchangeable looks, parts, heights, eye color, features.... Now comes with living flesh.

I can see it now!!!!!!!

Also for an extra few grand we can give you the licensed version of any hollywood star, grammy award winning artists, or model you want.

WOW

The only thing with that is, would the robot be able to stop the living tissue from rotting? Humans keep producing new cells and keep the cells from degrading. Could a robot do this, as it's not necessarily a living creature is it?

Good point! It would have to have some human systems in place just to keep the living tissue alive. Maybe some super pellet or something that they would ingest and not produce the kind of waste that we do. Or maybe make them able to eat and go to the bathroom. That way they could enjoy a candle lit dinner with you before the do the unmentionable things.

The one thing that did bother me in the article was the thought of even giving a child android to a pedophile in hoes that it would curb their abusing children. Somehow, even the thoughts of this activity with a robot makes me sick. I guess that's where the marrying comes in as I can already see where there can be human reaction and emotion attached in different ways. I don't really see a reason to marry an android though.

Hmmmmmm.......... Marrying an android, eh? If there is an off switch, that could be kind of nice. Wait! When designing this thing a mute button would be awesome!
Can I preorder?

You mentioned sex offenders with pliant robots. (I'm paraphrasing here.)

This brings up an important moral and social ethics question.

Do you want to work alongside someone who has spend the night molesting a doll? How do you think it would change the average person if he could literally own a pliant slave that he could assault without any legal repurcussions. Would you want this to become commonplace.

Can you imagine a co-worker or neighbor telling you their major hobby is molesting mannequins in his/her basement? Then he says, "but don't worry, I only do that to innanimate objects. Of course, one of them is modelled on you."

Lovely thought.

What a bright future we have in store.

That's just the point. I don't think I could accept that a pedophile is left to fulfill his fetish whether it be with an artificial being or not. It's still just not acceptable behavior in my eyes. However, if this stops them from going after human victims....If it were something that actually happened it would definitely have to be "don't ask, don't tell". I, as you say wouldn't work alongside some guy that told me about his child robot lover on break every day.

However, I can see where an adult version robot would eventually be accepted in a sexual way. I'm sure they will start out as domestic servants and eventually work into performing all duties previously attributed to a human mate. Will this turn people into slavemasters, could be! As I said, there are drawbacks and it's not necessarily associated with an unfeeling machine but in how it changes their masters and brings out the dark side. You know as well as I that once something becomes acceptable that people tend to push the envelope. I guess you would act the way you were predisposed to act.

One of the arguments of abolitionists in the pre-Civil War United States was precisely that, not only does slavery warp the personalities of the slaves, it also warps the masters.

I guess my question boils down to whether you believe there is some truth in that sentiment, and if so, what should be done about it.

There was a Star Trek Next Generation episode about a member of the Enterprise crew that was abusing the holodeck; having affairs with virtual versions of his workmates, etc. I think he had a program where he practiced overthrowing the captain and assuming control of the bridge.

. . . Not that I'm advocating "robot rights" in any way. Just asking what slavery does to the owner.

Footnote: "Robot" is actually derived from the Czech word rabata, which means forced labor. The ultimate root of the word is from the Latin orbus, literally, "orphan." link to webster dictionary definition

During those early American slave times there were slavemasters or family members that preferred treating the slaves better than their contemporaries. The associated problem with turning robots into slaves is the predisposition of knowing they are not living beings. If slavemaster behavior were unchecked chances are that even some of the nicer people would become enveloped into a warped attitude.

This is very interesting. The more I consider it the more questions cross my mind.

On edit: They could have built in alarms or shut down modes that would engage if they were abused.

I wonder if they are modeling robotic sexual behavior after this woman i dated once?

Though I am sure an orgasm with a robot could be electrifying... unlike with her.

In a worse case scenario, I can imagine two robots choosing each other over their human owners. If they are superhuman sex machines, wouldn't they prefer to do it with another superstar, instead of some fat lazy human, who develops blisters, etc.?

(edit to add)

And then that immediately conjures up the image of "robot porn," where instead of killer robots destroying each other in a competition, a sort of robot orgy. Wind 'em up and let 'em go at each other.

Who would enjoy watching such a display? I suppose it would depend on what the robots did for or to each other.

Since the pleasure centers are primarily in the brain, I'd picture the ultimate 'sex toy' would be some kind of device or a chamber (like a holodeck) and not a cyber-human.

Does anyone remember the movie Brainstorm?

One of the subplots involved a tech getting addicted to wearing the virtual reality device.

That people (and rats) will self-stimulate with a drug and prefer that to real sex is already known.

Yeah, there will be those that prefer some kind of cyber-bot, but it will probably be limited to the wealthy, whereas a small stimulatory device or chamber (similar to the one Arnold uses in Total Recall?) would be relatively cheap.
