A Canadian beginner

Hey there,

first post on this part of ATS (i think) and I was hoping "those in the know" would be able to provide a little information.

Basically Im interested in learning to shoot. Targets not live creatures (i dont have the heart to hunt) and I have no idea where to start.

What would any of you recomend as a beginners Rifle and ammunition or any other beginners gear you think I might need?

If any of you happen to know the laws or legislature regarding ownership and puchasing of ammunition and guns in Canada, that would be a help too.

I am aware that you need to register your weapons, do a course, and own a license to purchase ammunition, but im not sure if there's anything else i need to know.
