Its quite a common theory and one that in terms of position, indeed make a little more sense than the magical/fantastical land out in the atlantic or
halfway across the globe.
There is quite a good scifi/fantasy book about some ocean archeologists finding Atlantis in the black sea (along with a russian sub, heh) that came
out not too long ago, the name eludes me at the moment (unless it went by the name of "Atlantis". I'm sure it had it in there somewhere, lol).

yet another intresting theroy about atlantis here. but this one kinda makes sence.
i was just thinking about the black sea and how the tide rises in that area, also its alot closer to greece, witch could explain alot of things like the war with athens it would also be alot easy for plato to get there. have a look
as you can sea the black sea is whithin standard sailing distences at that time. it has also lead me to belive that the pillars of hercules have been sited in the wrong place, we all know that the mediterian was formed by mass flooding when the wall blocking the sea brock away but this also happend with the black sea.
if also explains why no one can find anything in the atlantic. if atlantis was indeed oppisite the gates of hercules then it must be somewhere with in range of sight cos how would u know that it was.
if your asking about south america then i belive there might of bin two socities of the atlantians one in the east and another in the west, this might explain the difference between two different prymid desgins the stright sided in egypt and the stepped in in south america.
