I am watching 1984 right now and it is the scariest thing i have ever seen in my life. Especially since I am taking a course in Intro to Mass Media.

Please if anyone knows of anyother videos or text similar please post them. I am hungry for knowledge beyond the level of fear i have for it.

You definitely have to see the movie "Brazil" - its from the eighties so it might be hard to find. DeNiro has a cameo role.

Essentially it is how data and information controls everything, marketing is everywhere, society is youth obessed and anyone can be declared a "terrorist" simply for going against the grain of acceptable behavior.

Oh wait...we're almost there!

Anyone else notice how they want to get rid of drugs in the film 1984, but they give them "Victory" Gin during lunch and i mean a big bottle >.<

It made me laugh at first....

Just finished watching the movie in its entirety and am horrified that this truly is a possibility. I mean we were first in afghanistan, than Iraq, and now almost no mention of afghanistan at all anymore its like its being erased from history and iraq is the only enemy there is, AND NOW theyre leading away from iraq towards iran. Its really creepy.

Even though they're sci-fi-esque, any movie based on Phillip K. Dick's work has overtones of this sort of thing. The books, naturally, were much more frightening. Dick had some obsessions about the nature of reality -- in fact, he'd be quite at home here on ATS.

Try A Scanner Darkly. Strange Days is a good one, non-PKD.

I didnt realize that they made a movie called 1984..
I read the book 1984 for a report in my senior civics class. We had a choice, either 1984 or Animal Farm, i did the report on 1984 but also read Animal Farm..

I really dont remember a lot about it, i should read it again.. I do remember that "good" citizens were given an allotment of some kind of "happy pills"..
Some people now connect those happy pills with SSRI's anti-depressants like prozac, zoloft and many others..

Anthem by Ayn Rand ... several others of her works ... being a great one I believe in this genre you are seeking.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury


I really think you will appreciate those books, not sure if they made movie renditions ... I found them great along with 1984.

Of course, if you haven't seen "Enemy of the State", I recomend that one too. It's not really dystopian, but it's about when an intelligence agency goes rogue, and, imho, very New World-orderish.
