I used to believe

In the SETI program but not anymore but I will say this..
BOINC sucks!
I ran the classic Seti@home for a few years. I even built a custom computer whos soul purpose was to run SETI 24/7 and out of all that time I only got one or two really hot signals lol..
But when BOINC came out, i tried to use it and get used to it but it just sucks. It required to much user intervention for my liking. SETI would run for months and months with no errors and no prompts coming up that required a mouse click..

I dont believe them anymore though. We get one WOW signal back in the 70's and then NOTHING for the next 30 years, bull#
I think that the WOW signal set in motion very strict protocols that were dictated by the government so that any further signals would not be publicized..

Yea, its BS.. Im not saying that BOINC is complicated, it just requires to much intervention for my liking..
@home was perfect.. I didnt use it in screensaver mode, i would manually execute it and just let it run in the system tray, that way was a lot faster than using screensaver.
I cant help you with BOINC, I quite using it about 3 months after the shift..

Haha, so true..
I just dont get it though.. Some of these people using these programs are armchair astronomers that actually know how to interpret some of those lines and bars that show up in the signals..
I havent checked in a long time but Im sure that google is FULL of stories from people claiming that they found "alien signals" in @home and BOINC and they were sure it was being covered up..
Dont misunderstand me, Im not saying I believe them, I was just pointing it out.

Another thing that always made me scratch my head about the SETI program..
They send signals to systems and galaxies that are several thousand light years away..
I mean come on, dont these idiots believe that in several thousand years we will most likely have the ability to travel to these systems, possibly getting there even before our signal does
I just think they need to search a little closer to home, what about these systems where the planets have been discovered??

Well, this topic made me think about Seti and BOINC so I decided to restart computing Seti data, just for the hell of it..
May as well, I just downloaded the most recent version so maybe I can get it configured so that it requires less user intervention..

Nah, it's just taking up system resources. Total waste of time, we already have mountains of proof of contact.

If you guys want to make a difference of some kind in the world, why don't you use your extra clock cycles for a program like this. It helps cancer reasearch =D.

Suggestion:

Go to one of the SETI optimization sites and download the routine to speed things up (for Inetl SSE/SSE2/SSE3, etc.). Forget the screen saver piece - you don't need that to crunch work units anyway.

Also, be sure to go to Boinc and get the latest version of the client (5.10.20). That'll smooth things for you a bit as well.

Good luck...
