His supporters dominate the assemblies, thanks to elections five years ago which were widely condemned as rigged.

Well, with rigged elections, anything can be accomplished.

Musharraf's many opponents fear he will rig the elections to cling to power. The United States still praises the general and has contributed billions of dollars in military aid. The No. 2 U.S. diplomat, John Negroponte, plans to travel to Pakistan next week for talks with Musharraf.

President Bush began his second term saying democracy topped his foreign policy agenda.

what do you mean?

Benazir Bhutto has been a long standing player in pakistani politics. The US is very familiar with her and where she stands on issues.

looks like Pakistan and the US can relate when it comes to questionable elections. The general population feels their politicians are corrupt and that elections outcomes are planned.
Pakistani cynical of election marred by boycotts, legal challenges, military candidate

The problem is that Bhutto has always been around corruption. First her father then her.
Yep Musharraf is possibly and I say possibly corrupt but I would prefer him whith his slightly Western leanings than Bhutto who always causes disent, especially now that Nuclear Weapons are around
