Favorite Shirt Syndrome

Topic started on 4-10-2007 @ 06:43 PM by kinda kurious

I suffer from "Favorite Shirt" syndrome. You see, I usually have a "Favorite Shirt" which I probably wear at least twice a week. I don't know why it is my "Favorite Shirt". Perhaps I like the way it looks or it's color or some cool buttons or pockets. Despite the many other shirts in my closet, I am always asking my wife, "Honey, have you seen my shirt?" and she knows which one I am asking about. It is always hung on the extreme left of my closet, in the prized first position, the first shirt you see when you walk in.

Then, since I wear it so much, it ends up either prematurely tattered, or I spill wine on it or burn a hole in it with my cigar, or it shrinks about 3 sizes due to some secret wash ingredient my wife adds to my clothes. ( She swears that I am simply gaining weight, but I know better.)

Time for a new "Favorite Shirt" and herein lies my dilemma. ( I go shopping, and oddly my "New Favorite Shirt" does have an extra X in front of the L size.) But when I take it home to hang it up, I feel sorry for my "Old Favorite Shirt". I feel so guilty and don't know how to tell it I have a "New Favorite Shirt". I think about all the great times we had, the memories, the flattering compliments, the endless photos, and I am sad.

So down it goes to the extreme right of the closet, with all my old former "Favorite Shirts". I can't seem to part with them or use them to wash the car. They hang in brave silence of memories past. Frayed, stained, ripped, torn, shrunken to the size that only a midget could wear. A colorful regalia and shrine in remembrance to days gone by.

And then, I put on my "New Favorite Shirt" and all seems right in the world. Now on to my “Favorite Shoes”…………………..

Am I the only one that does this? Is there a cure? Is there a support group?

regards...kk

I can totally relate to this! I had a favorite shirt that I wore about twice a week for years (about 15 of em)...the fact that no one except me liked the fact that it was brilliant turquiose, I still wore it and keep fooling myself into it being because it was 'comfy'.

It had to be literally hidden from me and binned as it have became so bad it had a 6 inch tear down the side and was frayed and faded, but still I refused to either stop wearing it or throw it out. It was a mess but it was my favorite. Most tramps would have refused to wear it lol, it wasn't a money issue either.....which is crazy

I actually got to the stage of trying to find an identical shirt (which had long since stopped being made) and went on a mission for months trying anything I could to find a replacement. Probably luckily I never did find a one the same.

Now I do realise how sad this all sounds , 'favorite things' are interesting, as our reasons 'why' are never what we think they are. BTW if anyone does know where I can find somewhere with a massive store of different types of turquois shirts let me know...I still keep my eye open to this day when I do clothes shopping...just in case you understand...just in case..
