halo 3 ending...

Finally I beat the game on normal and the ending is misleading and confusing. I dont know what Im supposed to think if masterchief lives or dies or what?
Hes flying away in the spaceship but his number 117 is scratched on the tombstone wit pictures of those who have died so someone helo me out what are they getting at here????

He is alive, the ship broke inhalf when high charity exploded and it was flying away, they just think hes dead because hes not on earth.
