I went on a date with a woman once who was an analyst with the Australian Federal Police and previously with the Metropolitan Police in London. She
had been involved in two major international child porn investigations and what she told me was this:
In a statisically important set, over 65% of those found with illegal images (not all were convicted) were also into Startrek. She said that they
discounted this in the official analysis because it was 'a bit too pop culture' and there was no actual link because those same 65% could easily
have been into something else or how do you define 'into'. Of course, she then looked at me and said "do you like Startrek? To which I replied
"err well the first series was a classic but I am not really into science fiction..."
The point my rambling tale about my love life is trying to make is that some statisics can, at first glance, appear to reveal something but it is only
if you know what you are doing and understand the psychological concepts of profiling that it moves beyond a coincidence, sweeping generalisation or a
stereotype.
