U.S. users: what´s wrong with using Emule?

Or a re-route like TOR?

Or am I being naïve?

Emule sucks, its days days to download anything, hours before a download even starts.

Both sharing and downloading copyrighted material like games music, movies is illegal.

The reason tpb is up and running is they simply have servers which directs you the right way, and that is not illegal. The illegal action starts when downloading/seeding.

i am not saying file sharing is right or wrong

but one american rapper said "the music buisness is like robbing the public legally" or words to that effect and i agree with that statement.

the public have been ripped off for years, mostly in the UK where we have too pay more for the pleasure.

"super stars" today earn crazy money from joe public
and they live in fairy tale land with all the trimmings...............

there should be a law that works for us too, that stops us from being robbed

No, you are totally wrong, file sharing is 100% legal, even in the US. File sharing copyrighted is 100% legal in some countries too. They even have a tax on blank CDs to account for this fact.

No one has ever been convicted of sharing their personal photos or own work. They have only been convicted of uploading, not downloading copyrighted material.

I have a book called Confessions of a Record Producer: How to Survive the Scams and Shams of the Music Business
By Moses Avalon

In it discusses how Major Recoding Stars often end up losing money on each album, and that their 'wealth' comes from the concerts they perform and the merchandise they sell.

On Page 90 it states that if an artist makes about $0.83 per album sold. So if they sell a million records they would make $830,000, except that their expenses to record the album, promote the album, and manufacture the album all come out of that $830,000 which also has their "Advance" removed.

So lets say you sign to a Major Label, it is likely that you will owe the Record Company thousands of dollars instead of cashing in after your first album. The book also states that it is not likely that a Artists will ever break even on there first record deal without extensive touring.

The Artist makes .83 cents per album compared to the 10 million plus the record company makes if the album sells a million. Unless of course the artist is independant, certain Rap Artists make more selling albums themselves online and out of the trunk then they could ever make as a Major Label artist.

I don't know... I don't understand the mentality of ownership over things like this. It is a crap mp3 or video... I can understand software to a degree, but at the same time the profit margin/price is way too high.

I don't know... Open Source is the way to go for "Freedom" the model we live in now is Capital Fascism that masquerades as "Democracy"

For the most part, my 'stand' against the Media Corps, has been no new Music Purchases in the last 5 years, I have stopped going to the movies, no cable/sat tv.... Instead I have Netflix, antennae tv, local radio and I ripped all the cds I already own which adds up to something like 50+ gigs, and like 30days straight.... What else do I really need?

The Media Industry needs to realize that they have been overbearing about the internet copying/intellectual property issue. Perhaps the industry is hurting because we really don't care anymore. Sure, I guess I could invest in whatever the next media technologies will be, but why? They are just going to change the format so they can get more 'sales'...

I think that the same holds in the computer industry to a degree... The personal computers in all our homes right now are perfectly capable of tasks that the average user will need for the next ten years. Alas, we keep getting faster chips and more memory because our vanity tells us we need to be "faster" and sure it is faster, but the amount of tiem one waits for a page to load today is about the same as it was 10 years ago via dialup, except pages have more 'information' on them...

I don't know, but I do know that I try not to give them any of my money anymore, they already have enough...

Good post! Artists get scammed by the record labels, not by the people downloading their music. Why do you think a lot of artists who make it big eventually open their own labels? For fun? I don't think so.

Which is why i havent bought a CD in 10+ years (since they got to £18 (about $36) here) and go to as many concerts as I can.

I have no problem ripping off the media companies who rip off both the fans and artists while i can support the artists in concert where they get to see the money.

What the "Americans" did to deserve this...?

Culturally we are shown how 'cool' Johnny Depp is while being a 'Pirate', but we get sued by filthy rich corporations if we 'pirate' their intellectual property. The whole thing stinks...

DocMoreau

It might stink to you Doc but that kind of inconsistency gives me a real headache.

Evrything is so backwards, I'm starting to agree with people who say this civilisation is a lost cause.

Some days, I wish for a "reset" button. But I can't be sure that we won't just re-start this mess... we haven't really learned anything because we're very reticent to see our own mistakes, to accept blame. We have yet to realize that our actions are inconsistent with our spoken principles, and we've yet to correct this (within our own conscious minds, and collectively).

The last true cause of any rebel is, I think, being a Good person. Ain't much else left anymore... (at least, not much that'll actually affect positive change).

Edited to add:
While I'm pleased that the thread hasn't died... (one for the calendar, to be sure)...
The thread wasn't meant to discuss which sites still work, or how to get around the current ban on US users.

If the original argument against downloading was that the artists and music/movie companies were losing money, then why haven't they done anything over-seas? Why are they (consistently) inconsistent?

What's the safe-guard in Europe that's keeping these fools out? (even if it's only "for now")

I think that this whole block on people in the US is just another way to control us. the way i see it, the companies are still making a lot of money, for the most part, even with all of us downloading stuff. i actually wrote an essay about it in a class last semester. the problem was that i had a class that required me to have office 2007 for excel and word. well i sure cant afford to go buy it, and it was definitely necessary to own it if i wanted to pass my class, so what could i do? well i got it from torrentspy of course. here is the thing, is that ethical? well look at it like this - i am not selling the downloaded program, i am not giving it out to everyone, i am not using office 2007 for anything business related. i have used it 99% for school, and then every once in a while to type something like a resume. so that to me is totally acceptable. did the business lose any money? no.
its my opinion that torrents do not cost companies much money at all.

Why would you want to get round this? They are blocking you for your own protection because they have to hand all logs over to the copyright mafia and this makes it easier for them to extort you.

Use another site that doesnt have to do this.

I have to admit, my husband is VERY dissapointed with this. LOL

He uses TORRENT, because it is the ONLY place he can find a certain kind of music he plays (he is a DJ - of psytrance). Seriously, there is no other place he can locate this music. He can not buy it online anwhere - as noone sells it. We live on a military base in the middle of nowhere, so no stores here. TORRENT was a huge asset to me.

Grrrr.
LOL

With that said, I do understand the whole situation. I have some friends in the music industry - that is how they survive. So if nobody is buying their stuff, but getting it for free. Then how do they survive.

So, I see both sides of the fence

I completely understand that.

A lot of DJs also release their mixes on the torrents. It's the best way to get it propagated short of going on tours.Even Armin van Buuren admitted once on his radio show that he used the internet to track down certain white-labels.

Certain genres of electronica (even more so for particular remixes) can only be obtained reasonably on-line. The market for some categories are so widely scattered it doesn't make sense to release them in stores.

It's a sweeping generalization to think that torrents are only used for illegal stuff. By that same token one can also generalize that the internet is used merely for porn exchange.

A bands frontman has just encouraged every to download their cd for free.

www.punknews.org...

He says they make no money anyway and have to tour 9 months a year just to make ends meet.

He wants people at shows to show up and support them and buy merchandise there.
