Excuse me?

The United Kingdom and the United States of America do not recongise the government and we don't acknownledge the country being called "Myanmar". We have both placed sanctions on the military junta, Britain has also pushed the European Union to act on many occasions.

The European Union and the US have done so much to isolate the government, but it's very hard when China and Russia (sometimes India) are very reluctant to do anything.

We BOTH support the democratic movement of Burma and the true leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the 1990 election.

Don't jump on stereotypical political views...

I read earlier in the paper that the US and UN are condemning the actions of the government and may place sactions. If only such condemnation and sactions could act as a bullet proof sheild for those being fired apon.

Where is the outcry from the bush administration and its supporters for the overthrow of this terrible military regime?

Because the democratic leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. believes in revolution via democratic and non-voilent means.

Plus, the Chinese will not be happy with US troops on their border.

I missed your previous post (above mine) explaining the situation a little more in depth, and explaining both the US and Britians functions on the international theatre.

One issue i see here is, US support (aid, military equipment, training, troops, etc) has historically uplifted the side of the regime the democratic forces are fighting against. The OP's knee jerk reaction (regardless of how glib it was) is pretty understandable, though it may not apply here, yet.

Lets not forget, the former US administration (Clinton) condemned the voilence in the former Yugoslavia and claimed they wanted peace, while actively promoting a deepenning of the war. One head says one thing, the other head does another.

A stark warning needs to be sent to that corrupted military regime, as far as Im concerned, a 666 head hydraulic guilotine needs to be sent there to take care of that regime. Shame on the world to just stand by and not help.

They have got oil. And natural gas too. The problem lies in that China and India are propping the military government up, with diplomatic support from Russia.

In the case of China and Russia this is hardly surprising, since both these nations have used similar methods to the junta to quell uprisings. Remember Tiananmen Square? The student protests in support of democracy in 1989? China sent in tanks and soldiers against unarmed demonstrators and killed between 200-800 (depending on the source you use) of them. China also oppresses Bhuddist monks in Tibet. So there's very, very little chance of the Chinese bothering to do anything.

Russia, too, used harsh methods to deal with dissent when it was part of the Soviet Union. Remember Hungary in 1956? Prague in 1968? The violent crackdown on Polish demonstrators in 1980s Poland, with the USSR threatening to intervene?

These nations have a history similar to that of the current junta in control of Burma. I don't think it shocks the governments of Russia and China as it does democratic nations, as they've dealt with similar situations in similar ways.

What of India? This is more complex, given that India is the world's largest democracy. It's probably something to do with influence and defence against China. India is very suspicious of China (which is to be expected, given that they are two rising powers) and wants to retain some kind of control over a nation that borders both themselves and the PRC. If they support the protesters and they fail, the Indians will be locked out of their influence with the military junta.

The rhetoric needs to go up a notch. Perhaps threaten to boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics, too, to make a statement. The West did a similar thing with the Soviets in 1980 because of their invasion of Afghanistan the previous year.
