Because of the public perception, fed by the sensationalist media, that freemasons are corrupt, networking, back-scratching middle-class snobs who's sole purpose is to feather their own nests at the expense of non-masons. This opens the door to any Unfortunate who is unable to take any form of personal responsibility to lay his or her misfortune at the door of the Lodge. "The Freemasons Did It!" "If it wasn't for them I'd be successful etc etc".
This perception simply will not go away because many people want to believe it rather than accept the alternative.

Much of the more extreme accusations are very well written and there is obvious intellect behind it. This is not merely a case of a fear or resentment of back-handers and nepotism. This to my mind is a systemised scapegoating. The lowest common denominator will always believe what is spoon fed to them but someone has to be holding and filling the spoon. Why do these people wish to call black, white and white black?

Now I can see quite clearly that there is a growing level of moral bankruptcy in this country. Everything from Freemasonry to Girl Guides has something positive to add to our current situation. Too many people, children (youths) especially are being left to wander aimlessly, they need direction, they need help. Why are we then marginalising the very organisations that can provide structure and a sense of identity?

Fear of paedophilia has put paid to many child based clubs and movements, they still exist but they fail to reach the children that most need the structure they provide. Judging by the state of the next generation that we are raising in the UK I do not have high hopes for anything to get better.

Less and less people will be growing up to become Freemasons and the such like. The Freemasons will by default become more and more elitist, whether that is the intention or not. It will become more nepotistic, because only freemasons will raise children that grow up understanding those values that are required. Self-fulfilling prophecy??

I'd really like to see a few of you Freemasons dusting of your revolutionary boots.

Democracy has failed. Time to try something new?

I think this is a complex issue, and probably a lot to do with the "globalization" of society and the centralization not just of authority but the very culture. In microcosm, this can be exemplified by the demise of the local newspaper ("real" reporting) and the rise of the national Tabloid (no actual reporting in evidence). Local friends and relationships have been swapped out for TV celebs and fantasy friends.

I couldn't agree more. The irony is that we have drummed into our children's heads not to approach strangers when the reality is we should be teaching them not to let strangers approach them. In that subtle difference lies the paranoia of an entire generation.

There is a quiet revolution going on within freemasonry right now. We are consciously exchanging quantity for quality in England right now, and the numbers will inevitably fall as a result. This is not be to mistaken for the death of the Craft, but is in all likelihood a rebirth. The same appears to be happening in the US too, but for structural reasons this is a little harder to achieve as there are counter-pressures in the system.

Don't confuse the conservative Brits with their revolutionary cousins across the pond

I used to work with a guy who was openly a free mason, even showing us his apron at work one day. I asked him how you can become a mason, expecting an answer about how he was approached under cover of darkness by two men in mirrored aviator sunglasses etc etc etc (I was being flippant).

What he told me was...

"well" he said, turning to look me in the eye, "you need to ask a Mason for a form and complete that"

Seriously, my ex-brother in law was a Mason and I know a lot of Scottish Masons. It is about social and business networking (not NWO style), lots of drinking, some charity fund raising and a place to get away from the wife. I could also believe that the odd parking fine disappeared through someones masonic connections but international conspirary?

I am waiting for someone to point to P2, the Vatican bank and the mafia... still not a NWO just rich dudes ripping off other rich dudes... Most freemasonary is about the drinking etc
