US military inspect Russian radar in Azerbaijan

Baku (AFP): A US military team will visit ex-Soviet Azerbaijan on Tuesday to inspect Russia's Gabala radar station, touted by Moscow as a potential alternative to controversial missile defence sites in central Europe.

The Pentagon delegation will visit the station, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the Azerbaijani capital Baku, in the company of Azerbaijani and Russian military experts.

What are people's takes on this? I'm confused, because when searching the forum to see if this had been posted, I found this thread which is in direct contrast to this news.

Do you think the Russian's offer is genuine? Is it purely because they don't want another 'Berlin wall' in Europe? I don't know enough about Azerbaijan, but to me it sounds US nuclear-defenses in an ex-Russian country bordering Iran could easily be taken out during a war. Would this render the US more vulnerable to attack?

If the US uses the Gabala radar site it will be jointly operated with Russia and it will compliment our sites in Poland and the Czech Republic. This is not considered a replacement site, just one to be used simultaneously.
