The consortium, led by Mike Dunne of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxford, UK, hopes to develop commercial nuclear fusion using lasers to crush together isotopes of hydrogen - deuterium and tritium - to create helium. This releases neutrons and huge amounts of energy.

Finally the planning has started. Construction will start only in 2011 "hopefully", according to this article. Anyway its a step in right direction.

That sounds great. Now I'd just like to find out about all the secret work that might be going on at CERN that we don't know about.
