Gary Derks, the state Department of Public Safety official in charge of the search, said the Air Force analyzed images picked up by radar and
satellite and "picked up what could be Mr. Fossett, his track."
How long does it take to analyze images? And do they have all *tracks* of planes in a data base?
It's been a real pleasure for me to contribute to your thread Icarus Rising.
Especially with all these Really smart people. I'll keep putting in my local 2 cents worth.

Here's the latest AP update from my homepage this morning. There is a big effort on this weekend to follow up on the latest clues to his
whereabouts.
Relying on a new Air Force analysis of radar and satellite images, crews looking for millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett combed the rugged Nevada
backcountry on foot and by air.
Dozens of searchers set off Saturday after analysts spotted what may be clues to the whereabouts of Fossett, who has been missing since Sept. 3.
"We have about 50 people on ATVs, horseback, walking _ anything they can find to get them into the canyon," said Gary Derks, the state Department of
Public Safety official in charge of the search.

Word today that Mr. Derks wants to reopen the full search based on new clues taken from radar and sat analysis of the area the day Steve went
missing.
...analysis of radar data and satellite images from Sept. 3, the day Fossett disappeared in a small plane, led Air Force technicians to believe they
had spotted clues to his route.
"We said the only time we would reopen the search is if we had viable leads. This time we believe we do," Gary Derks, the state Department of Public
Safety official in charge of the search, said Sunday.
AP story, no link yet
Thanks for providing those links when they come available. I'm not trying to leave it to anybody, or act like a bigshot, you are just getting to it
before I do. I know I am skirting the T&C's by not having a link, but the intention is to get the latest news out, and getting the link posted
quickly thereafter helps out a lot.
They must think they have some pretty solid leads to talk about reopening the search.

On the contrary Icarus, we're not in a posting competition, we are simply in different time zones.
AP news sources generally sindicate their stories to other networks and that's simply what I pick up on.
So, many thanks once again.

You didn't think much before you posted did you, that alright. Heres why:
People want to know exactly what has happened to him, if he has family, friends they obviously want to know! if hes dead they want to bury him.

i thought about it plenty....
what happened to him? he crashed
he is dead...not if...
so, do what they do when there is no body....you have the ceremony anyway.
oh, is the family coming out of pocket to pay for the continued rescue efforts?
i ask cause if it was say myself that went missing, the search would last for a couple days then it would be ruled that i could not have
survived...
you think people would be using google satelites and such for a normal, everyday guy? i don't.

If it was you missing, I'm not sure I would.........either!
Your comments have similarly been made in previous pages, several times.
So for the last time, I'm sure the CAP will be reimbursed.
When we get the outcome, I promise to send a U2U.

Celebrities are the American form of royalty. So, when something like this happens to someone as well known as Steve Fossett, it generates
considerable interest. Much more than if it was just Joe Schmoe, or you Boondock78, that had gone missing. It goes without saying. That is just the
way this system works. We all know it. Add to that the history and lore surrounding the general area he went missing in, and it isn't unreasonable to
find a big story made of the search.
It is also not unreasonable to note that what you, Boondock78, are doing in this thread could be construed as a borderline form of trolling given
what has recently transpired between us in the Kathy Griffin thread on BTS. I can understand if you aren't too pleased with some of my responses to
your posts there, but that is no reason to come over here and try to stink it up.
peace.

I see your point, and I also see that its most likely that he has crashed and is dead.
But there are people out there who want to know for sure, kind of like the people who want evidence for aliens, they need proof.
Without knowing for sure it will always be on their minds "what if hes not dead?" they wont be able to move on.
And If I loved you, I wouldn't give up, I would look for you for months and months just to be sure. I guess its a personal thing, some people would
move on after 2 days, others will not give up so easily.

Although in our society, we often play favorites with famous/rich people, that is not the reason for all this effort searching for Fossett. Under
California law, no one, not even partners, lawyers, or family, can administer Fossett's estate until he is found, or until 5 years have passed since
his disappearance. I think that does a lot to explain why people are spending so many resources looking for him.
As of Sept. 15, the search had cost an estimated $600,000 ( The
Canadian Press). That is a far cry from the reported $4 million spent searching for Amelia Earhardt
( Official Amelia Earhart Website).
The Google images, mechanical turk, the $10k reward, and private searches have been all privately funded by his friends and family. It's nice to have
friends who have such resources. In this case, you don't have to be rich/famous -- you just have to have the right friends.

Whew. It has taken me HOURS (off and on) to read this whole thread.
My eyes are bugging....not from the things I read, but from staring at the screen so long
Anyways, I have read so much, that I have forgotten much that I have read.
So, I apologize in advance if my question has been asked.
Do they know for fact that he actually boarded the plane and took off? Are there witnesses to this?
As far as the Air Force being involved. Well, they have (as we all know) imagery analysts (a job my husband almost took) that can do searches that
civilians cant do.
Also, him being very big into avionics...he is almost one of them...if you know what I mean. He has connections to NASA and such. He is a big deal in
the avians world...as he has done what others haven't. So, of course they would invest the time in searching for him. He is not just some Joe Schmo
living in a shack in West Virginia
And if it was my family member, I would never stop until the body was found. Its called closure. And until he is found, there is no closure. They
are just really lucky they have the financial backing to keep on searching.
I do not believe there is any conspiracy into this. I did at first. I thought maybe he walked away from it all and went into hiding for some odd
reason. But there is absolutely no evidence that I have seen presented anywhere that leads me to believe that there is anything of conspiratorial
nature going on.
Anyways, thats my $.02 for what its worth.
Anyone else have any updates or thoughts on it? Even if I dont believe everyone's theories...I love reading them. Great for the brain!

i didn't know any of that...i asked a few posts above...
i just was trying to point out(and was obviously wrong) that fosset should not warrant more/better/longer of a search than you or i...
if it is friends/family/donations or whatever then who cares if it goes on forever?
edit* let me clarify....if it was my wife or son, i would search till i died. i'd walk the desert like kwai chang cain....
i don't think the airforce would put in much of an effort is all you know.
