I saw the guy from Triumph (Rick) try it at Grossman's about a year (?)ago... he had to start over twice. It is subtly complicated and the timing is everything. Even one wrong note and it sticks out... most folks don't understand... you know it's so light and effortless, sounding. It really is beautiful. Leona Boyd does it every now and again on her 12 string... It really sounds "large". I'd like to see it done with two or four git-boxes Southern style sometime.

Oops gotta check the BBQ.

This is the current focus of my current group. Gypsy Jazz...a real challenge and departure from our usual Western Swing, folk and blues.

Jazz is unique among other music forms in that rarely are there set "groups" or "bands." It's mostly freelance players who roamed from act to act. Here are some names that are less mainstream but more applicable and diverse.

Older Straightahead Jazz:
Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue"; "ESP"; "Cookin'"; "Milestones"
John Coltrane, "Blue Train"; "Giant Steps"
Other luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillsespie, etc.

Modern Straightahed:
Kenny Garret, "Beyond the Wall"
Pat Metheny, "Trio: 99>00"
John Scofield, "Works for Me" (simply killer lineup of today's best players)
Dave Holland Quartet, "Extensions"
Herbie Hancock, "River: The Joni Letters"

Modern Progressive:
Brad Mehldau, "Largo" and "Art of the Trio Vols. 1 - 5"
Kneebody, "Low Electrical Worker" and "Kneebody"
The Bad Plus, "Prog" and "These Are the Vistas"
EST (Esbjorn Svennson Trio), "Seven Days of Falling"
Anything by Medeski, Martin and Wood
Depart Trio, "Reloaded"

Fusion:
Weather Report, "Heavy Weather"
Jaco Pastorius, "Live in NY Vol. 2: Liberty City"
Wayne Krantz, "Greenwich Mean"
Miles Davis, "On the Corner: 1971-1976"

Those are just some of my favorites. EVERYONE NEEDS TO HEAR: The Bad Plus, Wayne Krantz, Kneebody, Dave Holland, Brad Mehldau. These guys are my top acts right now.

For the coolest of cool jazz pianist on the planet, I'd recommend Keith Jarrett. I have almost ALL of his recordings and there's not one sitting around collecting dust.

Then, for a rising star, of who I DO have all their recordings, I'd recommend Michael Kaeshammer. Totally great Boogie Woogie artist with a growing following. I saw him live in Toronto a couple of years ago and he blew me away. I've heard that there is a new release coming out and you can bet it's on my 'to get' list.

This vid, though, is more of the 'cool jazz' variety;

Man, that brings up some good memories. I seen him in Pittsburgh (both our home towns) in about 1979. As was the custom, we smoked some strong cigarettes before going in. George got playing mighty mellow and about 3/4 of the way through the concert, I fell asleep on the girl sitting beside me's shoulder (complete stranger). I woke up feeling great and even though no words were spoken, she seemed pretty pleased about the whole thing herself. -Those really were the good old days
