One fact maybe you don't know.
In Crete (greek island) there is one of the largest US military base in Europe. Very close to middle east and because Crete still belongs to Greece it is also 30 minutes away from where we are burning.
It is a shame that no help came from this military base. Every country was sending some help, men, equipment, airplanes and what did the US do? NOTHING !!!!!!!!!

Did you really expect them/us to? I said it earlier, and I hate to say it because I live here but I'll say it again: If there's no money to be made from it, we have no interest in it.

alexandrehellas: Thank you so much for your post. It certainly is suspicious that the U.S. isn't helping, while Greece, Italy and Turkey signed agreements for oil with Russia, etc. and further, that the U.S. isn't helping.
I am horrified by all the fires in your beautiful country. I have been to Greece several times and I love it. THe people were warm, generous, friendly and helpful and the country is so beautiful. I am so sorry to hear of the difficulties Greece is having.
I found your post very enlightening and insightful. May the Hellenes rise again and the glory of Greece be restored.
Good luck to all of you. Please keep us posted OK?

Just thought I would mention Australian had sent a number of bushfire management specialists (fire behaviour and air ops.). Seems to me when America has fires, they scream for help, but when it's the other way round, it's tough luck, deal with it. Perhaps next time we leave them to deal with their fires by themselves.

Greek Election

The current conservative government in Greece has just won the election. They get to stay in power.

Greece has declared a state of emergency. Wildfires are raging out of control and are heading towards Athens.

BBC: Fires rage unchecked near Athens

Major wildfires north-east of the Greek capital Athens are burning out of control, officials have said.

The government has declared a state of emergency in the area as fire crews, backed up by helicopters and water-bombers, fight to contain the blazes.

Fed by strong winds, fires have reached the towns of Grammatiko and Varnavas, but no casualties have been reported.

The fires are the worst on the Greek mainland since those in 2007, when 70 people were killed.

You know I was noticing the rashes of fires in Greece as well as California.

Greece has always been a country of turmoil, and California, well it's been, yeah, California.

Anyway, I suspect that there are people deliberately setting these fires in both places to cause turmoil, tension, and deliberate fear among the people.

Look at Greece's history as an example in how Xerses caused strife among the Greek's by buying off politician's and causing strife among the people in order to gain the division of the nation in order to conquer it easier.

Figured I would throw my two cents in, Hellmutt, since I had been speaking on Greece earlier in one of your threads.

In California, the reasons for the fires are usually linked to either discarded cigarettes or fire places at camp sites. People don't put out their cigarettes and just throw them outside of their car, and individuals don't know how to properly put out a log fire. Occasionally we'll get individuals purposely starting the fires, and sometimes we'll get kids playing with matches.

As a former wildland firefighter I express my sympathies to the greek people.

For all those who want to use the occasion to bash the US,

you seem to forget we are in the middle of the fire season ourselves,

Heres a list of the fires buring in NA for the last 24hrs

It would be very irresponsible to send valued assest abroad during the time when we need them the most.

I can assure that when they are not being run ragged during our own fire season, many of the wildland firefighters go to work during the southern hemispheres fire season, our winter.

And the us airforce is not equipped nor are its personel trained for wildland firefighting.
They would be ineffective and their lives would be at great risk, much greater than that of a regular firefighter.

Greece is on fire again. More than 60 people have been killed so far, State of emergency has been declared, and they ask for international assistance. Fire fighters from all over Europe are right now in Sweden to help battling the worst wildfires in modern times. I couldn't see any recent thread about this.

From the live link:

'Families died huddled together'

Rescue workers found the bodies of 26 people huddled together near a beach.

Nikos Oikonomopoulos, the head of Greece's Red Cross, told local media the crew searching the area northeast of Athens discovered the bodies, apparently families, together.

The group was found near several burned out cars close to a walled compound, also gutted by the fire.

Arson suspected.

Arson suspected in devastating fires in Greece that killed at least 79 people

Multiple fires in different areas outside the capital of Athens seemed to ignite at once, leading investigators to probe whether they were deliberately set.

"Fifteen fires were started simultaneously on three different fronts in Athens," government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos told reporters.
