The front-runner for a $2 million NASA competition to build mock lunar landers has lost one of its two main vehicles in a fiery crash.

on Saturday, Texel burst into flames after it crash landed during a test. Its fuel and liquid oxygen tanks were so damaged in the impact that it would be easier to build a new vehicle from scratch than to repair Texel, says Armadillo test team member Phil Eaton.

Although it's nice to see companies outside the goverment funded organisations trying to develop new space craft will this type of craft useing fuel/liquid oxygen be any cheaper to run or more reliable than what we already have? it certainly doesnt seem to be pushing any boundries as far as technology goes.

I like the way he recalls the incident 'oh poo its gone wrong' or words to that effect!

$25,000 for the prize?? That's a bit naff, the teams probably spend that on fuel alone.

The $25,000 prize was for the first transatlantic flight in 1927, which was a considerable prize back then..

The NASA prize is $350,000 for the first stage of the competition, and $1 million for the second
