As some people know Russian is currently building an aircraft that wil take them to Mars 2018.

Why 2018?

Because Mars will be very close to earth at that time.

And this will cost the Russians $20 billion.

Yep, the I think there should be another space race if Russia's econmy in a few years can seriously handle it. Or better yet, a US/EU/Russia Mission to Mars, a group effort and would be possible even sooner.

Races are good for technology.

And if Russia and US can work together then as most people know.

Russia and US has some of the worlds smartest scientists.

I am glad to see this.

With both Russia and China ready tio advance the space race maybe the US will do something besides stall, we should have been there years ago

There is a chance Russia will be on Mars before US.

It is because Russia is consuntrating on Mars and US on a Moon base.

The US wants a moon base (zappa, ha ha I'm funny) for reasons of...
1) Future space exploration
2) Unlimited electical power
3) More natural reasourses
4) The proverbial deathstar ray gun

After that, we goto mars, then Alpha Centuri.

Yeah, the U.S. Moon base plan is great. From there we will be able to go above and beyond. NASA's top director, (forgot his name), recently said that NASA would be unveiling a new type of space ship before we have the moon base mission.

- From the moon, less gravity, easier take off
- Not as much fuel waste to exit Earth's atmosphere
- New space type, some sort of space 'plane' will be able to travel faster.

U.S. agenda for space sounds good to me right now. Russia looks good, too. Looks like humanity is finally stepping up to the task.

Yes US will build a base on moon first.

And from there they will be able to launch to mars.

But dont forget.

First gowers pay the most.

And people after get the info for free.

In other words what I am saying is when US builds a base it will be cheaper for others to build one too.

And about Russia going to Mars, US can go to they just dont want to take the blame if something goes wrong.

Yes the US wants to go, we, after moving the budget go around, could go now. There are other circumstances however that the US must attend to before we can. Russia hasnt realized, the West is in a second cold war or if you wish, a third world war, against terrorists.

Here is some very intresting info.

Russia want to go to Mars with US and EU by 2014.

But NASA doesn't want to.

Also it looks like Russia will go to Mars on May, 8 2018.

They will start a 500 day training course for the mars mission in 2005.

"The experiment to be carried out at the institute will involve six people spending 500 days in an enclosed space inside the ground module of a space station where certain conditions of a Mars flight will be simulated," he said.

The participants, who will be given three tonnes of water and five tonnes of food, "will undergo special training on how to act in hazardous situations," the official said.

Water and oxygen for the "flight" will be generated by means of the participants' own life processes.

"If a crewmember falls ill, the other members will have to provide aid on their own," Malashenkov said.

Russia might be on Mars earlier.

"Russia can overtake USA," an anchorwoman on state television said Thursday, echoing comments the previous day by a top Russian space official who said that Moscow is capable of placing a man on Mars within 10 years at one tenth of the cost of reported US plans.

"Technically, the first flight to Mars could be made in 2014. It would cost around 15 billion dollars (11.7 billion euros) to do it, compared with the American estimate for their project of 150 billion dollars," said Leonid Gorshkov, chief designer with Energia, the Russian space constructor.

Sure.... Something is telling me it's the Americans and not the Russians who'll pay the bill. Link

Also, it would be funny if the Reds weren't the first ones to go on the Red planet.

I am just glad to see we are ALL collectively getting off our azzes and going. The more countries involved the better, hopefully we will see a race between the US, Russia, the EU, China and maybe Japan. Nothing like compatition to spur things on, like Russian said almost all of our tech we have today is because of WW 1-2, the cold war and the first space race.
