errr.......IQ and education does not always equal morality.

I totally agree, so why did YOU bring it up?

Based on these findings, perhaps the entire population should have similar MRI's and those found with similar defective brains should be terminated before they can harm any childeren. Society as a whole would be better off by stopping this bad gene pool..........

How about purging our society of fascists like you who want us to turn into Nazi Germany? If we're going to kill people because we think they might have a certain sexual desire, we could at least kill beings of lesser morality and intelligence.

If you accept the concept then why do "Low" IQ murderers get a pass?

ERRR!!

This is a choice that these freaks make willingly. I would hate to find some scientific excuse for these bastards to use as a defense in court as to why they choose to be freaks!

I never said that I approved of pedophilia (or making it legal or anything of the sort). It is, however to many, a sexual desire, like other desires. And like other desires, you have to choose whether or not you act on them.

And no, I don't want to kill you.

Part-Time Monster

Thread still going? Monster Man's little gedankenexperiment still under way?

Then explain how you're going to deal with this, clever lad that you are.

In the late 1990s a previously blameless American began collecting child pornography and propositioning children. On the day before he was due to be sentenced to prison for his crimes, he had his brain scanned. He had a tumour. When it had been removed, his paedophilic tendencies went away. When it started growing back, they returned. When the regrowth was removed, they vanished again. Who then was the child abuser?

Is this supposed to be surprising?
It really doesn't surprise me. I mean, a person who finds a six year old girl "attractive" can't have much going on "upstairs."

Well firstly i should say check my other threads for my view on paedophiles.

Just because someone has these certain areas of the brain being different does not mean they will abuse children. There are no doubt people out there that keep it under control, if they don't do anything illegal then they shouldn't be arrested. Thinking and doing are very different things.

How many of us have had fantasies we shouldn't? Like if you have your boss screaming at you and you momentarily imagine popping him in the face? There was an article recently (which i can't find) talking about this, it was actually on the newscientist website i believe. It's something no one wants to admit and yet it is true that many people have violent fantasies but their brain kicks in and stops the actual act. The primal fighting brain is still there but we keep it under control, if we don't then we go to prison.

Despite the disgusting nature of crime that paedophilia is, thinking cannot be punished and the day we start doing that is the day that freedom finally dies. Freedom to choose is one of the most important things out there, that includes freedom to control your behavior.

Again i will state that anyone who commits these acts should be given life in a secure institution. It is sickening to think that some people have these urges, but if they leave it at thinking then, well it's not ok, but at least they aren't hurting anyone.

Had to edit for this. It is important we don't propogate the view that paedophiles are only found amongst the unintelligent. Intelligence doesn't mean you won't be one and by saying that you move suspicion away from some people. Teachers and doctors have been convicted of these crimes and it would be very dangerous to start passing a blind eye over people who work with children simply because we think they are to smart to be paedophiles.

From the article

Schiffer stresses that a causal relationship is far from clear. But he notes that similar differences have been found in people who suffer other forms of compulsive behaviour,

So what abuot people with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)? Would they have a similar fMRI scan and so be detained? This is where neuroscience gets seriously wedged into the grey area (yes there is a pun there).

But other evidence presents a more complex picture. In April 2007, another team, led by Kolja Schiltz, at Otto-von-Guericke University, also in Germany, published a study of the brain scans of paedophiles who confessed to being attracted to both children and adults.

The researchers found no defects in the brain regions identified by Schiffer's group although less grey matter was detected in some other areas

So you could have a similar pattern, not be attracted to children at all and be locked up? Remember that although we share a similar brain template people do vary a great deal.

I can't answer that but I read about a cab driver that had one.

Yes, and I know some "exotic dancers" that have PhD's. Really!!!!

Don't kid yourselves, a rather large portion of Bangladeshi gas station attendants here have PhDs and on top of that give physics/chemistry tuition to high school kids. It seems that the institutions they received their doctorates from aren't recognized by the Malaysian government, so you have those with a PhD in Petrochemical Engineering working at petrol pumps. So sad.

I started to comment on that myself.

A lot of people with advanced degrees work at menial jobs for a variety of reasons.

Some are retired. Some get tired of the rat race and take a break. Some are trying to find jobs in their fields. Some just want to supplement their incomes.

You can never be too sure just what that cab driver who's taking you to the airport did before he started driving a cab. For example:

In his part-time job as a taxi cab driver, former Albuquerque Mayor Harry Kinney frequently cruises past places in the city that cause him to pause and reflect.

Or that busboy at your favorite greasy spoon:

[Andy Kaufman] worked diligently a bus boy in a diner, throughout his entire acting career on Taxi, even though he was completely set financially. His boss there said he was one of the best bus boy he'd ever had.

This, right here, is step one of moral development.

The next step is to habituate oneself to not having 'wrong' urges. (I leave the debate of what is, or is not, 'wrong' for another thread.) Paraphrasing Aristotle: When reason and emotion speak with one voice.

In my head, I'm a mass murderer. I'm also (apparently) into some sort of voodoo or necromancy, since I raise them from the dead to kill them again (and again and again...) in many different ways.

I watch movies that resemble my steaks -- the bloodier the better.

My thoughts, my mental indulgences, while being morally incorrect, do not seep into my actions. I keep them in my head, where they belong.

Those who cannot disconnect (wrong) thought from (wrong) action need to be taught this valuable skill.

Not 'dealt with' pre-emptively.
