What are the saddest or most depressing songs you have heard.

Well for me I would have a few

Verve Pipe- The Freshman
New Song- The Christmas Shoes
Sarah Mclachlan- In the Arms of the Angels

That just a few I have a ton.

Listening to "Failure" (Swans) and "Failure" (King Missile) back to back is so depressingly bad it is hilarious, and gives you a lift any time you need that pep talk. It is the anti-Anthony Robbins solution and the world needs more of those.

Otherwise really anything by NIN or Tool is designed to keep the disenfranchised in that special place. They perform a great community service don't they!

Also I really think Tom Waits can be more "down" than Leonard Cohen.

But really no music can be all that depressing to me, except manufactured pop crud. That is really depressing, and it doesn't get listened to.

Alot of Stipe tunes are about Athens characters. Like Orange Crush was a red headed guy he was crushing on.

Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven"

It's not so much the song...it's the situation that happened to make him write the song. On
20 March 1991 at 11 a.m., four-and-a-half-year-old Conor Clapton died when he fell from a 53rd-story window in a New York City apartment. He landed on the roof of an adjacent four-story building.
He wrote the song to deal with his grief. I cannot listen to this song without crying.
