CARE turns down U.S. humanitarian food aid

news.yahoo.com

NAIROBI, Kenya - A humanitarian group has turned down $46 million worth of U.S. food aid, arguing that the way the American government distributes its help hurts poor farmers.

CARE said wheat donated by the U.S. government and sold by charities to finance anti-poverty programs results in low-priced crops being dumped on local markets and small-scale growers cannot compete.

CARE hmmm an oxymoron acronym. It seems that they want cash instead of food. Kind of like the bum on the street holding up the sign. Always jumping on the cash yet, food donations are often turned down.

Now in the context of agriculture subsadies, it may for the best for the US taxpayers. However, for groups like CARE et al, lets not look the gift grain in the germ eh?

Despite appearances I have to say that CARE made the right call in this case. The object should be to aid the locals and help make them more self sufficient and to care for there welfare which would mean that sometimes hard decisions have to be made . Organisations like CARE don't existed to collectively settle our cosinesses(SP?) and to support the continuation of corporate socialism.

We all can all sit behind our computer and debate this issue but how many can say that we have done any like the people that work for CARE are doing ?
I know that I cant say that I have served humanity in such a way.

IMO the development of GM food and its availability to local farmers could become very important if draught resistant crops are developed.
