U.S. Army Suicide Rate Reaches 26 Year High

Ninety-nine U.S. soldiers killed themselves last year, the highest rate of suicide in the Army in 26 years, a new report says.

More than one out of four soldiers who committed suicide did so while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to a report scheduled to be released Thursday. Iraq was the most common deployment location for U.S. soldiers who either attempted suicide or committed suicide.

This is another interesting piece of information to add to the ammunition for ending the war. I am sure it will no doubt be used as such. Also as to the twenty six year high. That also makes me wonder what was going on twenty six years ago. That would be around eighty one or eighty two. During the cold war. So maby the stress of the constant training caused that many suicides? No I don't think so but I don't have much of a better idea. Maby a sociologist could fill us in on that.

Isn't this rate of suicide still less than the US average per capita? What is
the size of the US Army compared to 26 years ago? The news services
always leave out important data that may dilute the hype factor.

It doesn't make sense that an all-volunteer force would have the highest
suicide rate. These are internet-age men/women who knew what the
military was all about before joining.

But on the other hand, the suicide rate among teens is the highest ever,
so maybe the soldiers are just a reflection of what's going on with young
people in general. Ever since parents started spending less time with
their children, due to both working, our young people have been suffering
at an ever greater rate. It's sad to see the turmoil predicted by the Bible
being manifested in society before our very eyes.
